Fishing Report Mid December to Early January

Capt. Gil Gutierrez
January 6, 2014
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Let me start out by wishing everyone a Happy New Year! We have been very busy on the "lucky Vee" since the middle of December. I have fished about 17 days since the middle of December to the beginning of January. The fishing has ranged from ok to very good. That fluctuation is caused by the inconsistent cold fronts that refuse to come all the way down to Florida. Yes I know you are reading this and don't feel the slightest bit sorry for us but those cold fronts get things moving here in Florida. We are supposed to receive one of our first real cold fronts of the year with temperatures reaching lows in the upper 30 to low 40's. This should really get those sailfish in a biting mood.
This time of the year the name of the game is sailfish and we caught some on every one of our trips except 2 where seasickness forced us in early. The sailfish bite has ranged from good to very good. We had several trips where we caught multiple fish. This trend should only get better as we move forward. One of the things that we have been missing has been the tarpon bite. Folks the fish are just not here in real strong numbers yet. These cold fronts may get the shrimp running and turn them on but right now the tarpon are being a little difficult.
While fishing for sailfish we have caught mahi-mahi, kings and even some blackfin tuna. The kingfish have been on the large size with our biggest fish close to 50#'s. We have also caught smaller kings but right now the kingfish bite is starting to get very good. Mahi have also made guest appearances with some gaffer fish mixed in with smaller fish.
The bottom bite has been very good. We have been catching mutton snappers, grouper, yellow jacks and amberjacks. Unfortunately or fortunately, depending on who you are, the grouper season is now closed which means we should start to catch these fish with reckless abandon. The amberjacks have just been tearing us up and have actually had to move from a certain spot because they would not allow any other fish to get to our baits. This is not a bad problem to have. Well that is my quick report for now. I will be fishing again starting on Wednesday so stay tuned for more report. Until next time, best of luck.
