Fishing is Good in Sunny South Florida

Capt. Alan Sherman
April 21, 2016
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Spring is in the air here in sunny South Florida. The weather at the moment is still breezy at times but that is what you expect in South Florida during the month of April. The fishing is good and comfortable as long as you pick the right location to fish and the good thing is that there is plenty of great areas to fish right now.

The fishing in North Bay has been pretty good. My clients have enjoyed some great inshore daytime snook action in the protected waters of Eastern Shores, Maule Lake north through the intracoastal waterways. Fishing mostly with live baits my clients continue to catch snook in sizes from 24 inches to way over 33 inches. Mixed in with the snook have been jack crevalles, barracudas and snappers. We have had shots at tarpon in the same areas as well. Back in the middle of North Bay the sea trout fishing has been fair. One day the fish are big and plentiful and the next hard to find

South Bay has had some sea trout to target but the rest of the fishery in that area has been tough.

The offshore fishing has been getting better every day. The down side to the offshore fishing has been the windy and rough conditions. The big boats are catching sailfish, blackfin tuna, bonitos, dolphins, big kingfish and a few wahoo on the surface and mutton snappers, groupers, jacks and cobia's on the bottom.

Flamingo has gone through some rough times recently but the snook are gathering along the coast as their spawning season is getting underway. Hit the shorelines with live pilchards, pinfish and finger mullet and the snook, redfish, tarpon, sea trout and shark action has been very good.

First cast with a Hookup lure jig head tipped with a Gulp soft plastic and bang a snook.

The Freshwater scene is much better at least if you are interested in action. The water levels in the canals in the Everglades Recreation Areas are falling slowly. The other day I did some fun fishing near Sawgrass Recreation Park and had nonstop action from big Oscars, bluegills and shell crackers. These fish were so aggressive that every cast of a Rapala floating minnow or soft plastic lizard resulted in a bite. The poor largemouth bass couldn't get to the baits quick enough. It wasn't till we switched to 12 inch plastic worms that we started getting strikes from the bass.

So there you have it. Be flexible as to where you fish and you are sure to get in on the action.

Thanks #WoodyWax for getting my boat shiny and looking new again!

Miami Fishing Forecast:

Spring is here and the fishing in South Florida is about to explode. With water temperatures rising sea trout and snook will start their spawning seasons. Bigger fish and bigger numbers of fish! Spanish mackerel, bluefish and kingfish are heading north for the summer. As they pass the Miami area they always provide a months' worth of action. Big jack crevalles will be chasing baitfish schools in North Bay and big tarpon will be stealing baits intended for other fish. Offshore we will see kingfish and Spanish mackerel, bonitos, sailfish, dolphins and blackfin tuna feeding right alongside each other. In Flamingo in Everglades National Park the birds will be leaving but the scenery will always be there and there is always the unbelievable sunrise and sunset pictures. Fishing for snook, redfish, snapper, sea trout, tarpon, jacks ladyfish, sharks, tripletail, cobia and more will be as exciting light tackle fishing as one could wish for.

Target Species:

Snook, Tarpon, Redfish, Sea Trout, Dolphin, Sailfish, Cobia, Mackerel, Shark, Tripletail, Grouper, Snapper
