Flamingo in Everglades National Park continues to be Red Hot!

Capt. Alan Sherman
August 6, 2014
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

This is a long overdue fishing report on what's been happening here on the "Get Em" for the last three weeks.

My work in Bimini on the big Hatteras is done now. We made three or four trips and canceled a couple due to weather. The ones we made were all great with plenty of snappers and a few groupers making their way back to Miami and eventually the dinner table. We had one trip where the big cero mackerel and kingfish kept us busy until it was time to go home. It was great fishing with great people.

Now my attention is back on the fishing here in South Florida. Business has been slower than normal but mostly due to the weather. We always get rain in the summer but this year the big rain storms and lightning storms have made it harder to be on the water.

Fishing in our back yard North Bay has been a challenge. Catching bait has been the hardest thing and has to be accomplished first thing in the morning or you may not have another opportunity the rest of the day. The live bait issue is so bad that most of the bait boats are not bothering to try. But there is bait around and if you spend enough time they can be caught. It's the old saying right place, right time and a little luck is all that's needed. Anyway with live baits we have caught ladyfish, jacks, barracudas, sea trout, snappers and sharks. We have had some small tarpon action but few snook bites. The problem with North Bay is the water has been very hot so the action tapers off quickly once the sun gets up high. This will all change as better baits move into the Bay and water temperatures start to drop.

I have been advising my clients to fish in Flamingo in Everglades National Park where the fishing has been red hot. Even though this is mostly shallow water fishing Flamingo has so many areas to be fished that it is possible to run from one spot to the another all day staying on the bite. You may ask what about the rain storms and the heat. During the summer most rain storms form over the freshwater areas of the Everglades. As the sun heats up these storms generate their own wind force and typically move from west to east not affecting the Florida Bay area at all. My last handful of charters to Flamingo I never had to put a rain jacket on while it rained all day in Miami. So what have we been catching in Flamingo? Lots of snook for catch and release, redfish with most of the fish in the slot (18"-27"s). Large sea trout, jacks to six pounds, ladyfish, snappers, catfish, tripletail, bluefish and lots of sharks of all sizes and we have had tarpon hooked and in the air on many of these trips. Yes it is a long drive and a long day when you fish in Flamingo but it's all day fishing and well worth it. I have fished a lot of 6 hr. charters in Flamingo recently starting at 8:30 to 9:30 and ending six hours later.

I have also had a few opportunities to get offshore of Miami and fish for dolphins. This is not a trip that I offer as a charter meaning the trip will start out as a Bay charter and only if I decide and the clients are OK with it will I take them offshore looking for dolphins. With my boat being a true bay boat I am not able to put as much gear on the boat as the big offshore guys. So when I head offshore I want a full live well of live bait and calm seas. On the days that I was able to get offshore we did catch dolphins, bonitos, wahoo and had shots at tripletail as well.
