Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Before I start my bi weekly fishing report I need to express how sad I am to here of the passing of a great fishermen, sportsman, fishing captain, guide to thousands, family man, host of the popular TV fishing show Spanish Fly and a special person that has done so much for South Florida's fishing and its community. On Friday captain Jose Wejebe of the Florida Keys was killed during a takeoff in his own Kit plane in the Everglades City area. My heart goes out to his family and many friends!
Easter and Passover! Both in one week!
Happy holidays to all of my family, friends and clients.
On to the fishing here in North Biscayne Bay, South Biscayne Bay, offshore of Miami, Flamingo in Everglades National Park and the freshwater fishing in the Everglades Conservation areas.
Business has been brisk and will continue to be that way for the next month or two but I still have a few scattered openings during most of the weeks to come. We continue to have unusually warm conditions for the last weeks of March and the first week of April.
Because of water temperatures that have hovered around 80's degrees it's hard to determine how the warm conditions will affect our fishing for the next few weeks. Spanish mackerel, bluefish, pompano, large jack crevalles and gag groupers that prefer cooler water temperatures continue to feed in the warmer conditions that we are having. The pompano may be done for this year but who can say for sure. Mackerel and bluefish continue to move in and out of the bay and at times along the beach have been providing non-stop action. We have not seen the large mackerel that normally are around this month as of yet. The large jacks over 10 pounds are playing cat and mouse with us but the two to six pound fish have been around in good numbers. Gag groupers continue to bend rods on some trips but not all and in the Bay we have had plenty of barracudas, mangrove snappers to two and half pounds, snook to 27 inches and a 4.5 pound redfish. Sea trout have started spawning and there have been trout way over 20 inches available over the grass flats. Most of the action has been on free lined pilchards, pilchards fished under a Cajun Thunder float, Rapala X Raps, Skitter Walks, Flat Raps, Twitchin Raps and Hookup lures tipped with a Trigger X shrimp or Gulp shrimp. Baitfish have been very easy or down right impossible to catch. Each day has been different. Offshore waters are producing kingfish to 20 pounds, sailfish, dolphins and blackfin tuna. Fishing in Flamingo has been very good for redfish with some large sea trout, snook, tarpon, tripletail and cobias being caught. I have not done any freshwater fishing as of now because the water levels in the Glades are still on the high side.
Recent Catches:
Today I have Dean Palmer, his wife Andy and Andy's brother Larry in Biscayne Bay for a half day of fishing. Using live baits and artificial lures the group released two snook, plenty of sea trout to three pounds, small jacks and lost two big jacks.

Today in Biscayne Bay I have Marilyn and Jason on board for a four hour trip and release plenty of sea trout, barracudas, bluefish and jacks.
Today I have Joel and Steve on board fishing North Biscayne Bay and offshore of Miami Beach. Final tally is 10 bluefish, six Spanish mackerel, lots of jacks, gag groupers, mutton and mangrove snappers, two snook and one redfish. One missed tarpon as well that would have been a Grand Slam for Joel. Almost everything was released.

Today we are in Biscayne Bay and offshore of Miami with Mel and Mickey. Today's catch would consist of 30 mackerel and bluefish, lots of jacks and bluerunners and two released snook and two missed opportunities with other snook.

Today I have Richard and his grandsons Justin and Brandon in North Biscayne Bay and offshore of Miami Beach. Today's catch was lots of action offshore from mackerel, bluefish and jacks and shots at bull sharks and the release of barracudas and a snook.

Today I have Ed his wife Barbara Ann and their granddaughter Hannah in North Biscayne Bay. Total catch during a four hour charter is two mackerel, bluerunners, sea trout, jacks and barracudas. All released.

Today I have Marjorie and Lisa in North Biscayne Bay and offshore of Miami Beach. Fishing along the beach the girls had lots of bluefish and mackerel action along with jacks and bluerunners plus two gag groupers and in the Bay the girls released barracudas and went two for five on snook to 27 inches and lost a slot size snook at the boat.

Today my son Zach took the boat out with his friends Drew, Michele and Julian to give me a much needed day off. Fishing offshore his buddy Drew released his first sailfish about 50 pounds.
Norman and his buddy Jeff are with me today to learn how to fish Biscayne Bay and offshore from a Bay boat. The fishing was tough but the guys had action from sea trout, barracudas, bluefish, Spanish mackerel and had a nice jack on fly.

Well that catches us up for now.
Plenty of trips to come and like I said before I still have a few open dates so drop me a call and let's see what we can find in the calm waters of Biscayne Bay and Flamingo or one of the other locations that I fish.
