Great Snook Bite Off of Miami and Flamingo

Capt. Alan Sherman
June 22, 2010
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

There have been lots of concerns in the fishing public about how bad the snook fishing would be in South Florida this year since the massive die off that occurred to the snook population on both coasts of South Florida this past January.

Finally we can put that behind us and start enjoying a great catch and release snook bite that is taking place up and down the coast on both sides of South Florida.

Up until a few weeks ago I had released just ten snook from two to 10 pounds since January while fishing charters in Biscayne Bay and Flamingo. Most of those fish came from a school of snook that I found while fishing a shoreline in Biscayne Bay. In the last week I have released ten snook on three different charters in Biscayne Bay and Flamingo and a buddy of mine released 25 in one day in Flamingo just a few days ago. Why all the snook all of a sudden. Quite simple! These fish are part of thousands of snook that did not die during the massive cold fronts that hit South Florida in January of 2010. These snook were the lucky ones that were able to get to deeper water that stayed warm enough for them to survive and are just now being forced out of the canals and backcountry by recent rains to par take in the annual snook spawning season that is just getting under way. A little late this year but when it comes to fishing everything has been a little late this year.

Fishing in Biscayne Bay has been very good especially if you fish early or late in the day. Avoid the hours from 11:30 to 4 PM and you can find yourself in a position to have some great fishing for snook, tarpon ,snappers, jacks, ladyfish, sea trout, barracudas and bull sharks.

Offshore the action has been best during early mornings but then its been very good late in the afternoon as well with kingfish, lots of bonitos, an occasional sailfish and scattered dolphins.

Flamingo fishing has been the best and in Flamingo one can fish a whole day and still be in great action. Snook have should up in good numbers and all different sizes and yes you must release them but who cares they are just so much fun to catch. They strike a wide assortment of baits, make exciting runs and jump. What more can you ask from a great fish that can top 50 pounds.Tarpon are still available and have been in almost area of Florida bay so almost any cast could result in a tarpon bite. Redfish seem to be almost everywhere from the canals surrounded by shallow flats, to the flats themselves, along the islands, shorelines and creek and river mouths and there are plenty of jacks, ladyfish, tripletail, a few Spanish mackerel, cobia, permits and more sharks then you can shake a stick at.

YOUR UP NEXT! Just give me call and let's see what we can catch!

I have recently been wearing a lot of Columbia Sports Wear on my fishing charters and the new Blood & Guts shirts are amazing. I have had mackerel, cobia and snook just splatter me with blood and one good washing and the shirts are as good as new. Check out their web site at www.columbia.com

Miami Fishing Forecast:

I expect the fishing to only get better in the Flamingo area as more and more snook become available and the redfish and other species stay strong and in Biscayne Bay fish early nor late and thee is a great chance that you will have an interesting half day charter or if the weather allows and baitfish are available after the sun gets up a bit we can run offshore and fish for the kings, bonitos and dolphins.+

Target Species:

SNOOK, TARPON, REDFISH, SEA TROUT, DOLPHINS, SHARK, COBIA
