Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Here's wishing all of my clients and sponsors a Very Happy Holiday Season and a Great New Year for 2009!
Thanks to all of you for supporting me this year and the years past. I'm looking forward to seeing you on the 2008 "Get Em" where fishing memories are made every week.
Every year I like to lend a hand to fellow boaters, fishermen and fisherwomen that like me have a difficult time deciding what to buy when it comes to Holiday gifts. Here are some of the gifts that I might want someone special to buy me for the Holidays.
Since I'm writing this and you're reading my list I will list a fishing trip with me Capt. Alan Sherman for a ½ day, ¾ day or full day in North or South Biscayne Bay or a full day in Flamingo. I have Holiday Gift Certificates available. www.getemsportfishing.com, [email protected] or 786-436-2064.
Does that special person own a boat & motor? No then check out the fine line of boats like the 22' Pathfinder XL made by Maverick boats powered by a 225 Four Stroke Yamaha outboard engine. Add a Power Pole and never have to stake out or throw an anchor in shallow water again. www.powerpole.com. Top it off with a Continental Trailer and your all set. Bob Hewes Boats has a fine line of these packages. Call Jim or Brian Wiborg at 305-681-6602 or stop by one of the two show rooms. 7701 Northwest 54st off the Palmetto Expressway or at 12565 & NW 7th Ave. in Miami. www.bobhewesboats.com, www.yamahamotors.com, www.maverickboats.com, www.continentaltrailers.com
Don't forget a trolling motor to go with that boat. Check out the fine line of Minn Kota trolling motors that Master Repair in Stuart carries. 1-772-220-7777 or 1-954-566-5833 or stop by the shop at 4446 SE Commerce Ave. in Stuart, Fl. www.masterrepairinc.com, www.minnkotamotors.com
Well if you want to make that boat perfect then you will need a state of the art Depth Recorder/GPS and the best by far is the Lowrance. www.lowrance.com
If you like to fish like me or you know someone who does then you will need a quality fishing reel and rod. Daiwa makes some of the finest reels on the market. www.daiwa.com and then you can't go wrong by matching the reel to a Key Largo Rod. www.keylargo.com.
Fill your reels with Berkley line and your tackle box with Berkley products like the Gulp shrimp. www.purefishing.com.
Every serious fisherperson needs a high quality cast net and the one I use is manufactured by Lee Fisher Nets. www.justcastnets.com.
Every fisherman needs a great pair of sunglasses and the best is the Costa Del Mar sunglasses. Check out their new 580 series or if your gift receiver uses a bi-focal lense then check out the C-Mates series. www.costadelmar.com.
My favorite jig head made by Hook Up Lures. www.hookuplures.com and
my favorite plugs Twitchin Raps, X Raps, Skitter Walks all made by Rapala. www.rapala.com.
Everyone needs some hooks and quality fishing line so check out the Mustad line at www.mustad.no
How about a subscription to the best Saltwater Fishing Magazine in print? Florida Sportsman Magazine is a great gift for any fisherperson and the Magazine also sells waterproof fishing charts for all of Florida, books that teach you how to fish for almost every species that swims, how to tie hooks, leaders and knots and then there are cook books as well. And don't forget to Florida Sportsman Apparel! www.floridasportsman.com.
If you live on the water or fish at night then add a Super Fish Light to your sea wall or dock and bring the fish right to your back yard. www.superfishlight.com.
One of my favorite tools while fishing in North & South Biscayne Bay and in Flamingo is the Cajun Thunder float. This float has been responsible for more catches then I could ever list. The product is a creation of Precision Tackle and the floats can be purchased at any leading fishing tackle supplier.
A special gift might be the StowMaster folding landing net. This by far is the best net on the market. A special coating has been applied to the mesh of the net and this coating won't allow a hook to penetrate the mesh. Ever have a fish in a landing net and have the treble hooks of your plug get stuck in the mesh. Just how frustrating is that? Won't happen with the StowMaster landing net and then it folds in half and easily fits in a rod locker. www.stowmaster.net.
And last but not least every boater needs a vehicle that he or she can depend on to pull your boat to and from the fishing grounds. And Chevrolet is the vehicle for me. Check out the fine line of SUV's and trucks manufactured by General Motors and sold by Chevrolet. www.chevrolet.com.
RECENT CATCHES:
Fished Gary C., John and Patrick in Flamingo and although the fishing wasn't what I was hoping for Flamingo rarely produces a bad day on the water. Gary caught his first snook and the guys ended up with 4 snook, a few pompano, jacks, ladyfish and trout. The best action was on Hook Up lures tipped with shrimp or Gulp baits and shrimp under a Cajun Thunder.
Next was Mark F. and his son Ariel and we are back in Flamingo on a beautiful day. Started out looking for snook and redfish and Mark caught a small redfish but the fishing in Lake Ingram was dead so we went looking for cobias and pompano out in the Gulf. The first spot produced nothing but small jacks but the second spot had a four boats already anchored in the area before we arrived. We anchored up in the area and lost a few sharks and caught a 7 pound black drum before moving on. Fished some flats in Florida Bay and had non stop action on trout, jacks and ladyfish before ending the day. Best action was on Cajun Thunders with live shrimp and finger mullet and Hook Up lures tipped with Gulp shrimp.
Next up is Norman B and his long time friend Cheryl and once again we are in Flamingo. Catching fish and taking pictures of wildlife is the order of the day so we start out looking for cobias and quickly hook up on a Hook Up lure and a large shrimp. The fish is strong and Norman is holding on but the hook pulls and we believe the fish to be a cobia but that fish will always be mystery fish. The spot Norman hooks up again with the same rig and lands a 9 pound cobia that is quickly released after a few pictures. On the move again we anchor up in a good looking area and Cheryl hooks up with a large fish on a live shrimp under a Cajun Thunder that turns out to be an 8 pound kingfish. Later we land a few nice lane snappers and release a mackerel plus lots of jacks before moving on. Now we turn our attention to birds and snook and redfish. The tide has run out and the flats have become exposed and birds are everywhere but not as thick as I have seen before on this tide. We catch one snook and release it plus jacks, catfish and ladyfish.
Today I am fishing with Bill and Arthur and friend Bob in South Biscayne Bay. The guys are looking for action and they get plenty. In a short 4 hr. trip they catch mackerel, bluefish, jacks, bluerunners, black and red grouper, mutton, mangrove and yellowtail snapper, houndfish and two nice porgies plus a few grunts.
Last up is Don and Sandra and they are looking for lots of barracuda release on 6 and 8 pound line for a Club competition. They need 13 on 8 pound and as many more on 6. We loaded the live well with pilchards and then headed to South Biscayne Bay where Sandra released 19 barracudas to 8 pounds plus a few houndfish and jacks. Don kept busy writing the numbers down. We saw a few permit and bonefish but never got a real good shot at them.
