HOT FALKL FISHING ON THE GET EM WITH CAPT. ALAN SHERMAN

Capt. Alan Sherman
October 13, 2012
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

It's nice to see my clients setting up charters for the great Fall fishing season in South Florida. Just in time to get in on some hot fishing from our residential fish species. This year due to warmer conditions and tons of freshwater the Fall Migration is off to a late start. Fortunately for us our residential fish like the small tarpon, snook, large and small jacks, sea trout, ladyfish and snappers have picked up the slack. Schools of small baitfish, large pilchards, a mix of medium size pilchards, large Spanish sardines and medium to large silver and black mullet have settled into the Bay making bait catching a breeze. Once we have caught our bait it hasn't been too difficult finding quality fish to feed them to.

Working the grass flats, shorelines and the inlet we are catching snook to 11 pounds, tarpon to 40 pounds, jack crevalles to 12 pounds and lots of sea trout, smaller jacks, ladyfish and a few nice snappers. I have heard of some Spanish mackerel being caught in the Bay but I haven't seen one as of yet. All we have to do is stay away from the canals that freshwater flows out from or our baitfish die in the wells. In most areas once you get away from the brown nasty freshwater areas and hit that saltier line the great fishing is right there to be had.

Schools of finger mullet and more pilchard and Spanish sardine schools are on their way south. The strong northeast winds we are having right now will push these baits in our area in no time. Bigger migratory fish will be right behind them.

On Thursday with northeast winds blowing at 20 to 25 miles per hour I found myself fishing Mike and Brad in the backcountry of Everglades National Park. Throwing Hookup lures tipped with a Gulp shrimp and Rapala Flat Raps the guys struggled to catch a mangrove snapper, two ladyfish and three sea trout. Soon we found schools of pilchards and finger mullet and after filling two wells with bait we were able to chum snook, redfish and tarpon into an unbelievable feeding frenzy that had these fish leaping clear out of the water as they ambushed our baits. These fish would have eaten anything at this point. End result was over 20 snook releases, four redfish releases, sea trout releases and four tarpon strikes, two in the air but none in the boat. The guys had a shot at a tripletail and saw two sawfish. Both anglers had Back Country Slams and a shot each at a Grand Slam.

Strong winds on Biscayne Bay Friday did not stop my clients Alex, Ana and Leo from releasing two nice snook, 20 jack crevalles to 12 pounds, snappers and barracudas using live pilchards fished under a Back Bay Thunder and hooked to a Mustad Ultra Point #1 to 1/0 short shank hook. All of that happened during a four hour charter with winds up to 25 miles per hour.

I will be back on the water on Monday and have a few open days each week for the next few weeks before the calendar opens up again.

The Fall migration will continue for weeks to come so you have plenty of time to get in on the action. Don't wait too long or you may miss out on another great Fall Migration!

I am often asked when is the best time to fish? Normally I answer with "When you Can". From now till December everyday no matter what the weather is is the best time to fish. Miss a day during the Fall Migration and you may have missed the best fishing of your life!

All of these fish were caught using Key Largo spinning rods, Daiwa Advantage spinning reels and Stren and P-Line lines.

What are you waiting for? Pick up the phone and lets go catch some snook!
