Hot Fishing In South Florida!

Capt. Alan Sherman
October 7, 2009
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

What a week of beautiful Fall/Summer weather we are having! Calm conditions on the water have made for relaxing and action packed fishing at times. The Fall migration of baitfish schools is in full swing now and the Oceanside beaches and North and south Biscayne Bay as well as all of Flamingo are filling up with baitfish. Many of the predators have not made it this far south just yet and that is due to warm conditions that have yet to give way to a full blown cold front but I have awakened a few mornings recently to the feel of cooler temperatures that quickly give way to the more summer like temperatures that we are still experiencing. However the large baitfish schools that have moved into local waters have sparked some exciting action from the local species like the tarpon, snook, sea trout, snappers, redfish, ladyfish, jacks, barracudas and sharks in North and South Biscayne Bay and Flamingo.

Offshore we are starting to see a few Spanish mackerel along the beaches with lots of bluerunners and jacks feeding on the huge schools of baitfish that have been holding around the inlets. Soon schools of bluefish, large jacks, large ladyfish, snook and tarpon will be feasting on these same baitfish schools. Further offshore we have had action from lots of bonitos at times large schools of blackifin and small tunas, kingfish, snappers and a few scattered schools of dolphins.

The best action recently has been during early mornings fishing the flats of North Biscayne Bay where lots sea trout of all different sizes are available and mangrove snappers are thick on many of these grass flats. We have been catching as many of both species as we want on live baitfish fished under a Cajun Thunder, Hook Up lures tipped with a Gulp shrimp and Rapala Twitchin Raps and X Raps. In many of the areas I have been fishing one can get a strike on every retrieve until a hook up is made.

Flamingo has been red hot and this is my favorite time to fish Flamingo. Florida Bay has an over abundance of small tarpon that have been scarfing down the Rapala Twichin Raps and the snook and redfish are eating the Hook Up lures tipped with a Gulp shrimp. We recently had a 150 pound lemon shark eat a snook right off our Cajun Thunder float and then baited that shark with a live ladyfish. An hour later we had the shark boat side before releasing it. Snook, tarpon, redfish, large jacks and sea trout are gorging on huge schools of baitfish that are migrating along the Gulf side shorelines and anything thrown into or around the baitfish schools has been eaten by a quality fish. Just a bit further offshore schools of Spanish mackerel and a few bluefish have moved into the area and can be seen from a distance as they sky rocket throw the baitfish schools. Bugs and rain storms that had been a bit of a nuisance in this area have subsided making fishing in Flamingo my hot spot of the month.

Now if this fishing report does not get you into a fishing mood then you are either dead or so caught up with stuff that you may miss out on that fishing adventure you have been waiting to experience all year!

Give me a call and let's go fishing!
