HOT WEATHER HOT FISHING IN SOUTH FLORIDA with CAPT. ALAN SHERMAN

Capt. Alan Sherman
May 13, 2011
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

To me it looks like here in South Florida Spring has already passed and we are experiencing what I think is an early summer pattern that normally doesn't start until mid or late June. The warmer water and air temperatures have already put us in an early morning, late afternoon and into the evening fishing pattern. Meaning we try to skip the late morning and as much of the afternoon as we can because it is so hot. With water temperatures in the mid to upper 80's and air temperatures hitting 90 degrees the bright South Florida has me drinking double the amount of water I normally drink in an 8 hour day and wearing light sun protective Columbia Sportswear clothing to protect my skin. The fish are reacting to the heat and bright sun light as well and feeding more in the mornings and then late in the afternoons. When fishing North Biscayne Bay I am pushing half day charters so to keep my anglers fishing during hours that the fish are more active and avoiding the hours from noon to 3 PM. When the weather allows fishing offshore can be done during an 8 hour charter. Fishing the reef in the morning for kingfish, bonitos and blackfin tunas and then as things start to heat up moving offshore to look for dolphins and then returning to the reef late in the day again for the tunas, kingfish and bonitos. Fishing in Flamingo can get pretty hot as well but because Flamingo has so many species to target and lots of shallow and deeper water there is always somewhere and something to target.

In North Biscayne Bay I will be targeting snook, small tarpon, sea trout, jacks, sharks and snappers during morning and late afternoon charters. Offshore when I can get out there we will target kingfish, bonitos, blackfin tuna, sailfish and dolphins and in Flamingo we target snook, tarpon, redfish, sea trout, cobia, permit, lots of big sharks, mackerel, jacks, ladyfish and tripletails. Freshwater fishing has been great due to low water levels staking loads of largemouth bass in the canals.

Recent Catches:

Today I have a 3/4 day charter in North Biscayne Bay with Jeff M and his kids Elliott 11, Marilyn 9 and Joseph 6. The older kids have been with me before and always manage a nice catch. After six hours of fishing the kids release over 60 fish including a five pound sea trout and a four pound sea trout with Marilyn catching the bigger fish and Elliott getting the next biggest. Many other trout, lots of barracudas, jacks, snappers and lizardfish where also released on live pilchards fished under a Cajun Thunder float.

Next up is Gene C and his grandsons Eric and Matthew and we are in North Biscayne Bay again. We have a short half day trip and the fish are playing hard to get but the kids still managed 20 fish with the majority of them being sea trout to four pounds caught on a Cajun Thunder with a live pilchard.

Back in North Biscayne Bay with longtime regular Jerry C and his grandsons Jake and Spencer. After catching plenty of pilchards we soon have the kids each hooked up to small tarpon. Neither kid had ever landed a tarpon before but with Grandpas guidance both fish make it to boat side for pictures and release. The remainder of the day was spent catching sea trout, barracudas and trout using free lined pilchards, pilchards fished under a Cajun Thunder float, Rapala X Raps and Hookup lures tipped with a Gulp bait.

Fishing in North Biscayne Bay again for another quick half day charter with Norman B and his grandsons Adam, Juda and granddaughter Jessica. The kids want barracudas and they got plenty of them. Casting live pilchards fished under a Cajun Thunder float the kids released all the wanted along with jacks sea trout and a few snappers.

Out of town to celebrate my daughter Courts graduation from Florida State and then sick for the rest of the week.

Back on the water with Dick, Dave, Ron and Bill all brothers and we launch in North Biscayne Bay and catch plenty of bait and then head offshore where the guys have seven bites and land two nice kingfish, two big bonitos and two remoras before we go looking for dolphins. No luck offshore and then no luck on the reef so we come back in the Bay and catch bunch of sea trout, jacks and barracudas.

Today I have Lowell and his six year old son Ryutaro in North Biscayne Bay and the guys catch a bunch of nice sea trout, barracudas and snappers and Ryutaro is high hook. The guys were fishing with live pilchards under a Cajun Thunder float and Hookup lures tipped with a Gulp shrimp.

Today I have Dave, Jeff and Doug on board and we are in Flamingo for a full day. We start out fishing for tarpon with live crabs and even though there were plenty of fish all around us we had no bites so we moved on. After catching pilchards and pinfish we headed for a nice shoreline where Doug got a backcountry Slam with the catch of snook, redfish and sea trout. Casting Hookup lures tipped with a Gulp shrimp, Rapala Twitchin Raps and Cajun Thunders with a live pinfish the guys continued to catch redfish, sea trout and jacks before we moved on. Fishing an area that had tarpon crashing on the surface the guys hooked only sharks with on being an incredible spinner shark that made a fantastic leap for us before breaking the leader. Later we would catch over six tripletail to 7 or 8 pounds and have shots at least a dozen others.

I have recently changed outboard engines on my 22' Pathfinder XL Tournament Edition Bay Boat. I had an opportunity to put one of the first Yamaha SHO 250 Four Stroke outboards on my boat and the difference has been just amazing. This engine has 25 more horsepower but carries 77 less pounds allowing me better hole shot while giving great cruising fuel efficiency. What more can a boater ask for?

I have been wearing a lot of Columbia Sports Wear on my fishing charters and the new Blood & Guts shirts are amazing. I have had mackerel, cobia and snook just splatter me with blood and one good washing and the shirts are as good as new.
