January Fishing Report

Capt. Gil Gutierrez
January 24, 2012
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

What a turnaround from just the beginning of the month. Let me take you back to that first day.
No current, green water and no wind make for a tuff day of fishing. And thats the way the month started. We were able to catch fish but we had to work hard and be patient. The sailfish were here and there and everything seemed like a struggle.
Fast forward to today and the story could not be any different. We now have some nice northerly winds and north current in on the reef. What that leads to is a very nice sailfish bite going on. We have caught sails on everyone of our trips except one where we meat fished and limited out on kingfish and caught several more in addition to those. On almost all of our trips we are catching multiple sails and at the very least getting one to two shots.

Lets recap a little bit of the fishing that has gone on this month. The sailfish are here and we are catching them. With the continued cold fronts to the north look for the fishing to just get better. The sails have come on the kite and flatlines when the wind was nowhere to be found. The bottom fishing has been very good. Much like the sailfish we have caught mutton snapper on almost every trip. The muttons have weighed up to 12# and everything in between. In addition to the muttons we have also been catching groupers, which must be released due to a closed season. Amberjack, almaco jacks, and yellow jacks have also bent the bottom rod on several occasion. We have caught several amberjack in the 25-40 pound range. The kingfish have shown up in good numbers as stated earlier. On some days it has taken only an hour or two to limit out on the kings.

For you mahi lovers they are biting on the edge. We have caught some while fishing for sails. The fish have not really been on the large size mostly 5-10 pounders.

The tarpon fishing has ranged from good to downright frustrating. On some days we catch three then the next day we only get one one. Much like the sail fishing which started out slow and gained steam as the month went on the tarpon is almost following the same pattern. The shrimp are running and this will help to make the bite more consistent. This is a fishery that will only improve as the months go on.

Well that is a recap of the past couple of weeks. I have only a couple of days left in January and February is starting to fill up. The week of February 16-20 starts the Miami International Boat Show. I have already booked 2 of those 4 days so if you are coming down to the boat show and want to go fishing don't delay. Give me a call and lets go fishing. The sails, tarpon, grouper, and snapper are all here waiting on you.

Till Next Time
Best of Luck...
Lucky Fishing Charters, Capt. Gil Gutierrez.
