January Offshore Fishing In Miami/Miami Beach, FL

Capt. Dave Kostyo
January 17, 2016
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

It seems like just yesterday that we welcomed in the 2016 New Year. Now here were are already half way through the month. Time is just flying by.

The fishing has been very steady with a variety of species. For the most part we have been fortunate to have had good weather for my trips.

Scott and Casey had a Friday half day trip scheduled. They arrived in Miami on Wednesday and the weather forecast called for very windy, blustery conditions on Friday. We made a change to Thursday and it turned out to be the correct call. By the end of the morning half day we had several mahi and an amberjack.

The rainy, windy, blustery weather blew through the area on Friday as predicted.

Saturday morning we were greeted with very heavy dense fog while catching a well full of pilchards. Next we added a good amount of live herring before heading out for a day of sailfishing. The goal was to catch John and Jeannie's son John his first sailfish. The seas were flat calm with little to no wind. We started with a couple of cutoffs by sharks and a kingfish. We got zeroed in on the sailfish and John was tight with his first sailfish. The sail put on a great show doing everything a sailfish is known for. We got within 4' of the leader touching the rod tip and the hook pulled. We reset, put out the baits, and it didn't take long for another sailfish hook up. This time everything held and John caught and released his first sailfish.

We had enough time for another drift to try and get Jeannie her first sailfish. A lot of heavy live chumming with both pilchards and herring had a sailfish chasing the offerings. It finally found our baited hook and Jeannie was hooked up solid to her first sailfish. Another good showing by her sailfish had us all shouting with joy. She did a great job of fighting the sail and we soon had it along side for some pictures before releasing it.

Mission accomplished with not one but two first sailfish for some very happy anglers.
