Mahi Mania!

Capt. Gil Gutierrez
March 20, 2013
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Mahi Mania is what we have been experiencing aboard the Lucky Vee. The mahi have been pouring thru the Miami area and eating almost anything in their way. The fish have all been gaffer size dolphin and a really nice addition to the fish box. We caught almost all of our dolphin on the kite while fishing the edge. What has really been lackluster and not really improved since my last report has been the sail fishing. I have spoken to several captains that have gone several trips without even seeing. The sailfish bite still remains , at best, inconsistent. That doesn't mean that there is no fishing action it just means that there have been very few sailfish to be had. And to be honest one good day of sail fishing does not make a whole season. I would rather be honest with my customers and explain the other opportunities that are available to them. So let's talk about those other options.

The kingfish have been biting well in on the reef. We had a couple of days where were able to limit out. The average size fish has been in the teens. We have also been catching assorted reef fish. Cobia, mutton snapper, and grouper have also been biting in on the reef. May 1 is the opening of grouper season and it should be good. I already have a couple of days booked just for grouper fishing in May. As you may know bottom fishing is my favorite form of fishing. Customers are always happy to take home a couple bags of fish. In addition to the bottom fish, mahi and the kingfish we have also caught several bonitos. Although they are not good to eat they are hard fighters that do not quit.
Let's talk about one of my favorite fish, Tarpon. I had several tarpon trips these past couple of weeks and we caught fish on every trip except one. And even then we still had a shot at the fish but just failed to hook up. The tarpon fishing remains very steady and we are still averaging about 2-4 shots a night. The fish are ranging from the 60-110# range. Well that is all for now. I will have some more reports for you shortly, but in the meantime.
Best of Luck…
