Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report
Yipee! March has arrived. Now let's hope it is as good as March usually is.
The last two years our Januarys have been too warm. This really slows down the tarpon and sailfish migration. Thankfully, these fish will still migrate south to spawn over the next couple of months. That should mean great fishing is right around the corner.
The warm winter seems to have produced the best winter snook fishing I can ever remember. Many of our inlet trips have been saved by several snook when no tarpon showed up.
Offshore we have been lucky to have a good winter for amberjack. These bruisers have been slamming vertical jigs and that produces smiles mixed with groans. Some of these jacks have been in the 70 pound class. We have tagged a bunch. I heard one of our big ones has been recaptured, but we are awaiting the report.
I wish this report was full of sailfish, white marlin and swordfish, but the report is no recent marlin. We did have a swordfish strike both our teaser baits while trying for a swordfish on fly Tuesday night, but the fish did not come to the surface to play. We have had some good sailfish days, but double digits have avoided us.
We have caught some big sharks over the last few weeks. Some nice grouper have tortured our anglers as we tagged and released them.
So the good news. Tarpon have shown up in Government Cut in good numbers. March usually means good mahi, sailfish and kingfish are due to arrive and finally our bookings are busy, so we will be there for the fun. Schedule your April and May trips now. look for big mahi and sailfish along the edge of the Gulf Stream. Big kingfish on the reefs. And tarpon eating shrimp along Miami Beach
