Marvelous May

Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

May has been marvelous! Except for the Weather.
We started out with super light tackle and great anglers. The Hiller gang caught sailfish, tuna, big mahi, big barracudas and tarpon on 6, 8 and 12 pound tackle.
We had some Tarpon trips with as many as 4 big tarpon. Hehl had never caught a permit till his tarpon trip. Ben requested permit to start his tarpon trip. He caught his permit, a big jack and 3 tarpon.

Robyn and Her gang caught several sailfish, a bunch of mahi and a tuna. Her next trip produced 17 mahi on a half day of fishing.

The Lighthouse Point Saltwater Sportsman group wanted a day pursuing swordfish. No such luck. They caught 2 mahi and a skipjack tuna on the way out. Jeronimo spent the afternoon fighting, tagging and releasing a giant bluefin tuna estimated at 600 pounds.

That was my first success with a giant bluefin since 1968, but not my last. Jeff caught a couple mahi, a blackfin tuna and hammerhead shark before hooking a giant bluefin tuna on the kite. We got the leader in a little over an hour on 20 pound tackle. The game was over after the wire broke after two hours.

Our last trip we caught a snook and barracuda inshore and then ran offshore to catch a blackfin tuna, mahi, bonito and 3 sailfish to close out our half day.

Crazy good fishing and horrible weather summarize our May.

Look for more blackfin tuna, mahi, snapper and snook in June.
