May Fishing Report

Capt. Gil Gutierrez
June 12, 2012
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

It has been a wild and busy May with lots fishing and some great news. Let's start with the good news! In the October/November time frame we should be fishing on a brand new 32 SeaVee. For those of you that have fished with me before the boat will look almost exactly the same save for some state of the art electronics from Simrad including side scanning sonar and a Cummins diesel engine. In case you are wondering there will be NO increase in price.
Now onto the fishing and it has been good. I always like to send my customers home with some fish and some good fishing memories and we have been doing that on a regular basis. The bottom fishing has not disappointed. We have caught black grouper to 23 pounds. The mutton snapper bite has also been pretty good with a couple of double digit muttons hitting the deck. The kingfish have been cooperating as we have been adding a couple to the box on almost every trip. Our largest king this month tipped the scales at a little over 32 pounds. Add in some amberjacks and the bottom bite has been very good and should stay that way for a while.
On our late afternoon trips we have been catching some blackfin tuna. The fish have ranged anywhere from the low teens, to our biggest fish this year, that came in at 31 pounds. Mixed in with these blackfins have been the bonitos and you sometimes have to cull thru a couple of bonito to find a nice blackfin. The sailfish bite has slowed down. Although we have caught some this month with our best day being 5 there has definitely been a downturn in the amount of sails I have seen. This is a normal summertime pattern.
The tarpon have not let me down in the month of May. We caught tarpon on every trip we did in May. The fish are big, healthy and hungry. The tarpon will not be here forever so if you want to catch one give me a call and let's set something up.
Well that is it for now. My apologies for the late report but between fishing and setting up the new boats time just slips on by.

Till Next Time
Best of Luck…
