Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report
Man oh man is May on a roll. Let me put it to you this way. On our worst day we still managed to go 1/2 on the sailfish and a couple of mahi-mahi. That was our worst day! To say that the fishing is good would be a mild understatement. To catch a fish right now all you need to do is put some kind of bait in the water. I hate to write these words because sometimes it comes back to bite you but that is an accurate description of what is going on.
I fished last Saturday with John Grunau and friends we went 1/3 on the tarpon at government cut. The next day we headed offshore for John's first sail and after catching that fish we added a couple of mahi-mahi to the icebox.
On 5/3 if fished with Alex Arue who flew all the way from Argentina to fish. This is Alex's second time fishing with me and he would not be disappointed. We fished a half day trip and ended up 2/3 on the sailfish and a mahi-mahi. But this trip would also end in disappointment as we lost, okay I lost, an estimated 40-45# kingfish on the gaff. Once I hit the fish with the gaff I was unable to bring him over the gunnel and as he shook off the gaff he landed on the line and broke it setting himself free and breaking my heart. See even captains make mistakes!
On 5/9 I had Alexander and his 2 friend all the way from St. Petersburg, Russia. All they kept telling me was that they wanted "Big Fish" We ended up getting him a large sailfish. And they were very happy. Add in a kingfish, a 4 foot long hound fish and a missed sailfish and there is someone telling a fish tale in Russia about fishing in Miami.
Also on 5/9 I tarpon fish with DR. John Maizell and his guest. We ended up going 1/3 on the tarpon. We caught our first fish and the released the other 2 for future angling adventures.
On 5/11 I again had Alex Arue fishing with me before he was scheduled to fly back to Argentina. This time we would take on some south beach tarpon. On our third drift we hooked a double header of tarpon losing one and sticking the other. The fish was an average size fish of about 70 pounds. This fish was not oversized by any means but what he lacked in size he made up in heart. We hooked this fish on the south side by Fisher Island. He then took us into the cut then proceeded to head to the other side of the cut then to the north side of south beach then back to the cut where we snapped the hook from the amount of drag we were applying to this fish. After an hour and a half fight in which Alex and his three friends took turns fighting they said "No Mas" and we headed for the barn.
You can pretty much count on this type of action to continue for the rest of the month. So let's get in on the action. My prices are still the same as they were at the beginning of the year and the boat is only 5 months old! So give me a call and lets set something up.
