Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Offshore fishing has slowed this past week. Only a few Dolphin were found
offshore. The Sailfish bite was slow. The only encouraging action was the
Kingfishing along the edge on the reef. A few anglers found “smoker kings”
along the edge using live baits. They reported catching 20 lb. Kingfish during
the morning hours. Avery Waterman, captain of the Blue Sea II, a head boat
out of Watson Island (305-358-3416) , reported better action at night. They
have been finding a good Mutton bite at night off Miami. The fish have been
averaging 4 to 6 pounds, however, 10 pounders have not been uncommon.
The Mangrove Snapper have also been biting along with the Muttons.
Captain Ray Rosher (305-788-FISH) has been making the run offshore at
night for Swordfish. He has been finding a fish about two out of three trips.
This past week he had Cary Chen as his angler, and he caught a small fish
under one hundred pounds. They then hooked a larger fish on eighty pound
tackle and fought the monster for three hours before pulling the hook.
Captain Rosher guestimated the fish to be over three hundred pounds.
Interest in Swordfishing has been increasing during the past month. Many
more fish have been caught recently. I don’t know if the fish are making a
come-back, or that there are just more anglers fishing for them. Either way
it’s nice to know they are around again. Now might be a good time to give it
a try before the winds of winter start to blow.
News from the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council. They have
proposed a Plan for the management of Dolphin and Wahoo. Basically, the
rules are as follows: Prohibit the sale of recreationally caught Dolphin and
Wahoo. Charter boats with a special permit will be able to sell their catch. A
recreational bag limit of 10 fish per person or 60 Dolphin per boat per day
whichever is less. Establish a recreational bag limit of two Wahoo per person
per day. Size limit of 20 inches fork length for Dolphin caught off Florida
and Georgia, with no size limit for fish caught north of Georgia. ( What’s
with that? Either the fishery needs management or it doesn’t! ) The plan also
sets up rules for the commercial industry. You can obtain all the information
at their web site at [email protected].
The first leg of the Bahamas Wahoo Championship Series will begin on
November 7th-11th at the Bimini Big Game Club in the Bahamas. Other
events will be held at the Lucayan Marina Village December 5-9, The
Walkers Cay Resort January 16-20,and The Abaco Beach Resort February
6-10th. These will be Wahoo only Tournaments. Fish three out of four days.
The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, in an effort to develop a wintertime
fisheries in the Bahamas, invites competitors to enjoy the warmth and
hospitality of the Bahamas Out Islands during the winter months. For more
