Miami, Florida - Offshore

Capt. Mark Houghtaling
December 4, 2000
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Have you ever heard of “Matching the Hatch”? If you are a fly fisherman

from up north, it’s a term used to explain the method of matching your bait,

or fly, to what the fish are eating today. In other words, if the fish are eating

June Bugs today, you will have to present a fly that looks like a June Bug! So

if you are fishing for Sailfish and they are eating Threadfin Herring.....do you

feed them Goggle Eye? No, you feed them Threadfins! That’s what I did this

past week and came up on the short end of the stick.

I fished the opening of the Mini-Met tournament and came armed with what I

thought was the best assortment of baits I could get. I had two dozen frisky

Goggle Eye and probably five hundred live Pilchards from two to five inches

long. The best baits money could buy, right.........WRONG. The entire week

before, I had been catching Sailfish on Threadfin Herring. They were tearing

them up! So why did I change? I don’t know...I thought I could tease them up

with the Pilchards and then I would annihilate them with Gogs. Boy was I

mistaken. Everyone around me had Threadfins, and they were catching

Sailfish left and right, up and down. I did manage to catch one while

everyone else caught two, three, and four! I am convinced, that if I had

Threadfins I would have been right there in the mix of things. Don’t get me

wrong, I think Goggle Eyes are great bait, but just not this weekend. The fish

were eating Threadfin’s. Who knows what’s going on underneath the oceans.

Obviously, Sailfish were eating Threadfins under those waves this week, and

I had a preview to that the days before the weekend, but I was to stupid to see

it. All I can say is open your eyes, some things can be so obvious to us while

were fishing , but we get tunnel vision and refuse to let our eyes see whats

really happening out there. I except the this weeks title “ Dumb Ass”... Thank

You. I’ll try not to let it happen again!

On Thursday nights, from 7pm to 8pm, at the Old Cutler Raw Bar, South Dixie Highway

and SW 184 Street, come listen to “Fishing South Florida Style”. This is an hour long
