Miami, Florida - Offshore

Capt. Mark Houghtaling
April 16, 2001
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Anglers are anxiously awaiting the arrival of a sustained Dolphin run. Up until now,

Dolphin fishing has been sporadic at best. Our neighbors to the south, off Key Largo, and

Islamorada, have seen better action than we have this past week. I have had a few

confirmed reports of large catches of schoolie Dolphin. It’s obvious that the fish are

south of us. We’ll just have to sit and wait patiently until the fish make their move to the

north. If anglers wanted to increase their chances of a more successful Dolphin trip, they

should run further to the south to possibly intercept migrating Dolphin heading north.

Frigate birds and diving Petrels have already been sighted diving on schools of Mahi

Mahi. Petrels have been void in our area since late autumn. They traditionally follow

migrating schools of Dolphin and arrive in our area about the same time the Dolphin do.

Sailfishing slowed following the full moon, but has once again picked up this past week.

Anglers were finding a mixed bag of Sailfish, larger Kingfish, Blackfin Tuna, and Bonita,

between the Monument Buoy off Key Biscayne and Triumph Reef. A surprise run of

large Bluefish were found off Fowey Light during the middle of the week. Local captains

were surprised to find packs of sharks attacking the Bluefish during their apparent

spawning ritual. The fish were averaging ten to twelve pounds and were hitting jigs and

live baits. Mike Pellini reported having great Mutton Snapper action at night while

fishing the fingers channels around Stiltsville. He was using live Pilchards for bait and

chumming inside the channels. He said the incoming tide was best.
