Miami, Florida - Offshore

Capt. Mark Houghtaling
June 12, 2001
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Mixed reports have been coming in from Dolphin fisherman ranging from

good to poor. Some anglers reported running over 120 miles a day and not

finding a single Dolphin. While other anglers have found 4 to 5 pound

schoolies feeding along the edge of the stream. There was an increase in the

amount of twenty pound Dolphin caught this past weekend. One thing is for

sure. With daily temperatures becoming higher and higher and hitting ninety

degrees almost every day, your chances of catching fish will increase if you

get out on the water earlier. Typically, this time of year, you will also begin to

find Dolphin further offshore. An alternative to fishing during the day would

be to fish at night. There will be less fisherman on the water and the

temperatures should be more to your liking as well as the fish. Night time

Snapper fishing should be terrific during the months of June, July, and

August. Anglers anchoring and chumming along the deeper reefs should find

Mangrove Snapper, Yellowtail, and the occasional Cubera Snapper. While

the temperatures will be hotter, the winds should be calm which will allow

many anglers to venture further offshore at night to fish for Swordfish.

Swordfish appear to be making a comeback and many anglers have been

finding small Swordfish ten miles offshore. In the late 70’s it was not

uncommon to hook two to three Swordfish during a nite trip and at least one

of those fish could have topped over three hundred pounds. Today, after

heavy pressure from longliners, there are not as many fish and they are

smaller, however, there are still enough fish out there to make your night

interesting. Live bait and large dead squid are the baits of choice. Fish the

baits at different depths as you drift with the Gulf Stream. Some anglers are

even slow trolling baits on downriggers. Cylume lights are placed above the

baits to increase the likelihood of the baits being found.

The 3rd Annual West Marine and Pirates Den Dolphin Tournament will

occur on June 23rd. First prize is $2000.00 plus a trophy. Second place is

$1000.00 and a trophy. Register at West Marine at 19407 So. Dixie Highway
