Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Calm weather and a lack of “other” fish made fishing this past week slow. However the sailfishing has been good. If it weren’t for the sailfishing, fishing would be pretty tough at best. Sailfish have been found up and down our shoreline. Anglers are having no trouble catching two to three fish per trip. On occasion you can hear of a few anglers finding dolphin or king, but they are few and far between. I made a few runs offshore and found an awesome weed line out about eight miles but no fish. I found another line in 400 feet of water and we did find one small dolphin. I did see one angler boat a thirty-pound dolphin off a pallet. They could appear in numbers at almost anytime, especially with the warm weather we have been having. A check of past seasons at this time of the year showed anglers catching dolphin, kings, bonito and a few Wahoo during this moon phase in January. I had a few reports of anglers giving up on the deep water and trying their luck at “patch” fishing. They found a few legal sized muttons, cero mackerel, and plenty of undersized grouper. This week is the Ocean Reef, Reef Cup Sailfish Tournament. The area off the whistle buoy off north Key Largo will look like a parking lot from Tuesday through Saturday, Feb 2nd. South of that area they have been catching a few kings
