Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

A brave bunch of anglers fished this week during the Boat Center Yamaha Bob Lewis Billfish Tournament. Winds on Saturday morning were sustained at 28 knots with peak gusts to 33 knots! My team on the “Magic Fingers” headed south off Triumph Reef and bucked seas of 12 feet and better, occasionally taking a few over the bow. But not letting the wind get the better of us, we flew our Force Five Bob Lewis Kites (8 holes) and hung on for dear life. We only managed to raise two “window shopping” sailfish while some boats caught four fish that day. Many anglers caught Dolphin in the twenty pound class, while the same schools of fish would pass up live baits only to head south. There have been quite a few Dolphin starting to show but they have not been eating well. Some captains reported seeing a school of Blue fin Tuna, while other hooked up with Yelowfin Tuna. It seems that the tuna always make a showing this time of the year when the winds crank over twenty knots. Very few kings were caught and I heard of a Cobia being caught on one boat. Sailfish was even slower on Sunday. Much of the problem was very dirty water out to 250 feet. However there was a screaming current to the north, which usually makes for good Sailfishing.
Look for Dolphin fishing to improve steadily as we get nearer to the springtime, and bigger fish should be found during the next month. Next month is the Contender Yamaha Miami Billfish Tournament and typically there are large numbers of sailfish in the area. Blackfin Tuna should be on their way. Blackfins to thirty pounds will be caught during the next three months.
