Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

A major turnaround in the dolphin fishing offshore off Miami was a welcome site these past few days. Previous to this week anglers found mostly small schools of peanut sized dolphin. Then, during the Kiwanis tournament of last week in Homestead, anglers began catching larger fish. On Thursday, I fished offshore and found a nice supply of large fish. Most of the fish were singles, but they were larger fish. The fish were found under Frigate birds and were moving very fast, mostly to the north. Our largest fish of the day was a 38 pound fish! We also caught a few in the twenty pound class and larger school size fish of 8 pounds. I spoke to Captain Jimbo Thomas who fished the same day,and he caught ten fish, all of them were over ten pounds and one fish he estimated at 40 pounds. He also found his fish under frigate birds and also stated the fish were moving very fast to the north.
It was windy enough to fly a kite and we did try to fish the edge with live pilchards, however the houndfish were so thick we couldn't keep a bait in the water without having the "dogs" hanging onto our baits. We did see a school of very small dolphin swim by the boat but we didin't even try to catch them. A few bottom fish were caught including undersize muttons and grouper. I would say the best bet right now would be to try for those big dolphin. We used live baits to toss ahead of the fast moving fish which they quickly devoured. Good luck.
