Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Sailfishing continues to be excellent off the Miami area. They can be found from Ft. Lauderdale to Key Largo in good numbers. It’s not uncommon to hear of six to seven releases per day. Live bait is the key, and most anglers are either kite fishing or slow trolling their live baits behind the boat.
There has been an increase in the number of Dolphin showing up this week, but they have been very difficult to get to hit. We found diving birds, hovering over schools of Sargasso weed, with school dolphin underneath. We tossed small live pilchards to them, which are gumdrops to a dolphin, but they would turn their noses up at them. I think they are eating very tiny glass minnows, and are not interested in much else. That could change overnight and they could be back to their ferocious eating habits any day.
Kingfish have been around the “boil” off Government Cut, and there have been a few large bonito around as well. Blackfin tuna should begin to show up any day now. Typically off Key Biscayne we will start to catch larger Blackfin’s in the twenty to thirty pound range this time of year.
Don’t forget the Miami International Boat Shows starts tomorrow, Feb 13. There will be plenty to see there for the fisherman, and of course plenty of boats. See you there.
