Miami, Florida - Offshore

Capt. Mark Houghtaling
May 10, 2004
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Dolphin action is heating up. We were hearing reports in previous weeks about large dolphin on the move south of us in the keys. Well, they have arrived, and we are beginning to see catches of larger dolphin occurring in our area. Many anglers are finding slammer and gaffers under diving birds from 400 out to 1200 feet of water. Occasionally there will be fish over thirty pounds in the same area. One angler caught a fish tipping the scales at 49 pounds. This action will continue for sure, right through June. Weekends will be getting busier as everyone wants to cash in on the action. There will be multiple dolphin tournaments on every weekend. My advice is to be sure to catch a few live baits before heading offshore. The fish will be pounded hard on the weekends and you may find them reluctant to hit. A few live pilchards thrown in their direction should get their attention.

Other action includes sailfish, blackfin tuna and kingfish. Anglers fishing live baits under kites are finding the sails and blackfins. I spoke with one angler who caught six sailfish off Government Cut during two hours of fishing in the late afternoon. Bottom fishing has been fair. The muttons should be biting during the next full moon. There are still amberjack on the wrecks, and expect bonitos to show up in your baits at almost any time.
