Miami Fishing Report: Key Biscayne to Triumph Reef

Capt. Orlando Muniz
February 20, 2007
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Boat Show Week!

During the last week I have only been able to fish a couple of times due to some work being done on the boat. This past weekend saw our temperatures plummet to into the 30’s and 40’s not to mention the wind chill. I don’t remember ever seeing so many jackets and sweaters at the boat show. Now let’s get down to the fishing.

On my first trip we fished deep for vermillion snapper using electric reels and hooks baited with bonito and squid. Even though we were marking a lot of fish, the bite was pretty slow despite beautiful seas. One of the guys wanted to try some deep jigging and he was not disappointed. Fish were caught on both traditional jig and ballyhoo combinations as well as the new butterfly jigs. Our day was topped off with a trip to one of my favorite Spanish mackerel hangouts. We caught about a dozen of these guys both on small live pilchards and artificial lures.

Yesterday (Presidents Day), I was scheduled for an afternoon trip and we decided to look for sails and kings. It took about an hour to fill the baitwell with a bunch of threadfin herring while also managing to catch a few Spanish macks. Once we got tired of catching macks we decided to look for something bigger. The winds had been blowing from a westerly quadrant which meant green water out to more than 300’. Action was non existent here, so off we went looking to catch some dinner.

We dropped some baits over some deep wrecks and ledges and were able to catch some nice lane snappers. We also caught a beautiful red grouper that put the finishing touch on a really nice afternoon. The sunset over Miami Beach was unbelievable.

February has been a very busy month, but I still have some open dates. Please call or send me a message if you need additional information.

Tight Lines,

Capt. Orlando
