Suicidal Cobia!

Just one week ago today action was quite hot. The blue water finally moved in over the shallow reefs and the current was moving nicely. Both of these factors caused fish to start moving and feeding. Double digit sailfish action was common and there was enough dolphin and kingfish to fill in the gaps. Last weekend the blue water was still around but the current was down to a light trickle causing the fishing to once again slow down. Some boats did manage to put together some nice catches consisting mainly of kingfish and bonito.

On Saturday we had a very interesting thing happen. The angler fishing with me brought a couple of new rods that he wanted to break in. He got his chance when a 25+ lb. cobia swam up to check out the boat. I asked him to reel in the short bait so that the fish could see it. Not long after the fish saw the bait, he gulped it down and made a run for it. The fight was going smooth and the gaff was ready when a small screw inside of the reel came loose causing the whole thing to lock up. We began hand lining the fish in until there was enough line for me to splice it to the leader on another rod and the fight was on again. Shortly thereafter the fight came to an end and the cobia was safely in the box. The fish gods were on or side this time.

Spring is one of the best times to fish South Florida and the next couple of months should be very productive overall. We should start to see some larger kingfish and dolphin moving through.
