Fishing North Biscayne Bay
with Capt. Alan Sherman
Fishing in North Biscayne Bay has been great with the exception of the days when the wind has been blowing hard. Now that the cold fronts have started you can expect at least one a week with some weeks two. The good thing is that there always is a few days of he week where the wind lays down enough to get in on some good inshore protected fishing. North Biscayne Bay is laid out so that the only winds that make fishing really tough are the straight North or South winds which blow straight down the Intracoastal Waterway making the middle of the bay down right rough when the tide runs against it. The good thing is that those conditions don’t last for very long and on many trips we can fish around them keeping us in mostly calm waters.
Lots of baits have settled into the bay, Pilchards, Spanish Sardines, Threadfin Herring, Glass Minnows and Mullet of different sizes. All of these baits have attracted many different types of game fish like Snook, Tarpon, Speckled Sea Trout, Jack Crevalles, Ladyfish, Spanish and Cero Mackeral, Barracudas and Sharks. On any given trip we have encountered all or some of these fish which has made bay fishing very interesting to say the least.
Recent catches have included:
Snook to 15lbs. With one trip producing 4 up to 30”s.
Spanish and Cero Mackeral to 4lbs. With some trips producing as many as 30 in a day.
Tarpon to 80lbs. With most hooked and lost.
Barracudas to 30lbs. With quite a few from 20 to 30lbs. Stealing our Mackeral.
Speckled Sea Trout to 3lbs. With some trips producing as many as 50 Trout in a day.
Jack Crevalles to 9lbs. With many 2 to 5lbers. Daily.
These catches have all been made with light tackle 6 to 12lb. test on artificial baits aand live or dead baits.
So don’t let some of the best fishing of the year pass you by!
