North Biscayne Bay Fishing Report

Capt. Alan Sherman
January 5, 2004
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

FISHING NORTH BISCAYNE BAY

with Capt. Alan Sherman

It’s time to welcome in the New Year and say goodbye to another spectacular season of great fishing, charters and clients. Thanks to all that made 2003 special for me and “Get Em” Charters Inc.

The year ended with sporadic fishing here in North Biscayne Bay mainly because of the rapid drop in water temperatures and the lack of baitfish in the bay. Schools of small jack crevalles 1 to 4 lbs. have been menacing the few pilchards that have found themselves left behind by the main group of baitfish that have moved south to Gov. Cut to take advantage of warmer water temperatures in the deeper water. With the jacks are scattered Spanish mackerel. On the grass flats small to 16” speckled sea trout are available but you have to move around a lot to find them. This time of the year I find myself fishing other areas as the North Biscayne Bay area slows down. Dumbfoundling Bay for tarpon, jacks, snapper and snook, the artificial reef area off 36 st. for snapper, grouper and tarpon, deeper channels and canals for jacks, snapper, grouper and tarpon, the ocean on a calm day for king mackerel and Spanish mackerel, the beaches for pompano, jacks, and Spanish mackerel, Gov. Cut for Spanish mackerel, snapper, grouper and tarpon, Flamingo for everything and the finger channels off Key Biscayne all the way to Elliot Key for snapper, grouper, pompano, bluefish and Spanish mackerel. Fishing in North Biscayne Bay will return to normal as soon as the baitfish schools return in a month or so. Trout fishing will only get better on the grass flats as long as the water temperatures stay in the upper 60’s.

Recent catches:

David & Jason Ross fishing the finger channels caught gag & red grouper to 8 lbs. releasing all but the 8 lb. red.

John Plant and his nephew Evan Charpudy caught and released Spanish mackerel, gag grouper, mangrove snapper, speckled sea trout and jack crevalles in North Biscayne Bay.

Ron Fiero his son Shawn and Shawn’s friend Kenny fishing in Flamingo caught 2 of 4 redfish, over 50 speckled sea trout, jacks, ladyfish and catfish. All were released but one 18” redfish.

Steve Menken and friend Conner caught and released speckled sea trout, jack crevalles and gag grouper to 7 lbs.

Paul Fass & Don Kaplan caught 5 king mackerel and gag groupers & mangrove snappers.

John Gomez and his 10 yr. Old daughter Adriana caught over 20 speckled sea trout and numerous jack crevalles to 4 lbs. in North Biscayne Bay.

Rick Kuci his son Conner and nephew Mike caught and released Spanish mackerel, jack crevalles and speckled sea trout fishing in North Biscayne Bay.

Murray Verlin caught and released over 20 speckled sea trout and 2 Spanish mackerel and wore their arms out on 1 to 4 lb. jack crevalles.

Give me a call and book a trip soon for a great no pressure relaxing day on the water!
