North Biscayne Bay Fishing Report

Capt. Alan Sherman
February 26, 2004
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing North Biscayne Bay

with Capt. Alan Sherman

Hi, it’s time for a fishing update. The fishing in North Biscayne Bay has been almost as good as my business and that is why I have not had a chance to update my fishing reports. With the foul weather of yesterday I finally have been given a day to get caught up. North Biscayne Bay’s water temperatures have risen steadily and that has brought Spanish Sardines, Pilchards, Threadfin Herring, Glass Minnows, Finger Mullet and Shrimp back into the bay. Feeding on the baitfish have been some real quality sized Speckled Sea Trout, small Spanish Mackerel, Pompano, large Ladyfish, Snook and small Jack Crevalles. Snook and small Tarpon have been available at night. The Speckled Sea Trout have been plentiful and of a good size with many fish over 15”s and as big as just 4 lbs. The only draw back to the larger Trout is that they are full of roe and although in season they probably should be released until they have had a chance to spawn out. This is a great time to fish with the outside temperatures in the mid to upper 70’s and night time temperatures in the lower 70’s. Quite comfortable! For anyone interested, the Mast Academy High School is having the first Mast Academy PTSA Fishing Tournament on Sat. April 17th to raise money for scholarships. Entry forms can be obtained at your local fishing tackle dealers or by going on line to www.mast.dade.k12.fl.us or if you would like to be a sponsor of the tournament call 305-284-8311 and ask for Suzanne Levinson for more information. Also on Sat. March 13th at 11:30 a.m., Sun. March 14th at 9:30 a.m. & Mon. March 15th at 6:30 a.m. I will be featured fishing with George Poveromo’s on George’s fishing show George Poveromo’s World of Saltwater Fishing on ESPN2. Watch George battle Snook, Barracuda, Jack Crevalles, Mackerel and Sea Trout right here in our back yard. Recent Catches have included: Mr. Soto and Isaac from the Yamaha Corp. fishing a half-day caught Sea Trout, Jack Crevalles, Blue Runners, Porgies, Grouper and Snapper fishing in North & South Biscayne Bay. The Dick Williams party caught and released 20 Sea Trout up to 2.5 lbs., Jack Crevalles and Barracudas in North Biscayne Bay. John & Craig Hoover visiting from South Carolina caught and released 10 Sea Trout, 1 juvenile King Mackerel, 3 Spanish Mackerel, 4 Barracudas and Jack Crevalles fishing Biscayne Bay. Key Largo Rods provided the fishing rods they used. Lisa Hansen & friend David Haeft visiting from Wisconsin caught and released Speckled Sea Trout, Barracudas, Jack Crevalle and 2 Snook fishing in North Biscayne Bay. Derek Arneson and friend Gregg caught and released over 60 fish on natural baits and artificial lures like the Capt. Hank Brown Hook Up lures with Saltwater Assassin worms attached & Surface Plugs fishing in Flamingo in Everglades National Park The catch included Speckled Sea Trout to 20”s, Ladyfish and Jack Crevalles. Dr. Paul Fass & Don Kaplan caught 6 Spanish Mackerel, King Mackerel, Jack Crevalles, Barracudas, Mangrove Snappers and Gag Grouper fishing in North & South Biscayne Bay. Dr. Robert Shebert and friend Dennis wanted to see if there really was a population of quality Sea Trout. They caught and released as many as 20 fish up to 3 ¾ lbs. on Hank Brown Hook Up Lures with a Saltwater Assassin Shrimp imitation worm attached and with live Shrimp under a Cajun Thunder. Dr. Daniel Nixon and his brother Harvey caught and released Sea Trout up to just less than 4 lbs. On Hook up lures and live Shrimp they were using Key Largo Rods. Now is the time to get out on the water. With rising water temperatures and comfortable fishing conditions there is no excuse for not tasking advantage of the great fishing and calm inshore waters. So for now “Tight Lines & Good Fishing”
