North Biscayne Bay Fishing Report

Capt. Alan Sherman
May 17, 2004
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing North Biscayne Bay

with Capt. Alan Sherman

May 16, 2004

It's been awhile since I last wrote a fishing update but it is not because I haven't been fishing but because I have been very busy with charters and family outings.

Fishing has been pretty good despite the weather which has been pretty windy to say the least. For what seems like months the wind has been howling almost every day. Why? Because of a very stubborn high pressure area that is sitting just off the Carolina coast and refuses to weaken and move away. End result winds as strong as 30 knts at times. If I was reading this I would think better to go watch a good movie then go fishing but you would be wrong. Despite the high winds and choppy bay the fishing has been pretty good. Speckled Sea Trout have made up most of the catches recently but thats OK because they are over size fish. Recently we have seen as many as 1/2 dozen Trout over 20"s and as long as 24"s and 4 3/4lbs. My last two trips Friday & Sat. have produced as many as 1 dozen Sea Trout over 20"s and over 2 lbs. plus dozens of fish between 12"s and 18"s. We are catching them on 6 & 8lb. spin and the fish are eating Hook Up lures with Saltwater Assassin shrimp tails plus hand size threadfin herring on a Cajun Thunder cork. Mixed in with the Sea Trout are a few Spanish Mackerel, juvenile King Mackerel, Ladyfish, Jack Crevalles, Barracudas and Mangrove Snapper. As bad as the wind has been the key is to find a spot where there is a little wind protection. In North Biscayne Bay and Flamingo that has been easy to find. Once you find the right spot the fishing has been hot and furious. Wed. I was in Flamingo with Jerry Chaves and we landed 1 Redfish, 1 Tripletail, 1 Jack Crevalle, 1 Catfish, 6 big Ladyfish & 6 Speckled Sea Trout over 15"s. We had a shot at a 30 lb. Sawfish, 1 Snook and a few large sharks. Not bad for a very windy day. On Friday fishing with 3 guys from Canada in North Biscayne, we landed a Spanish Mackerel, 1 King Mackerel, Jack Crevalles and Bluerunners, missed a couple of Barracudas and landed over 50 Speckled Sea Trout to 4 1/2 lbs. Saturday again in high winds fishing with two visitors fron Texas we landed over 30 Speckled Sea Trout to 4 3/4 lbs. and some Jack Crevales. If the wind does ever let down look out because the fish are going to go nuts!

Don't let the wind keep you off the water. This next week I will be fishing both Flamingo and North Biscayne Bay and still have open scattered Dates thru the end of May.
