Fishing North Biscayne Bay
with Capt. Alan Sherman
June 7th 2004
As we all know the High Pressure area that had stayed strong in the Atlantic has finally weakened and allowed a more normal summer pattern to set in. The high winds of March, April & May have given way to the light S.E. winds we are more accustomed to in June and the rest of the summer. With the good always comes the bad. The bad being the heat! With light winds this time of the year we get hot steamy late mornings and early afternoons with scattered well-needed rain. So, what’s this all-mean to the light tackle inshore fishermen? It means calm mornings that allow for great sight fishing for rolling Tarpon in North Biscayne Bay or tailing Bonefish & cruising Permit & Tarpon in South Biscayne Bay. Fishing early mornings and late afternoons on a falling tide can be all you need for a spectacular half-day of fishing. Early evenings in North Biscayne Bay can see some exciting Ladyfish & Jack Crevalles plus Snook and small Tarpon around the shadow lines along many of the local bridges & the dock lights. Speckled Sea Trout, Barracuda, Jack Crevalles, Mangrove Snapper and Bull & Black Tip Sharks can be had all summer long but some patience & time will be needed to locate them. Summer rains flood the Everglades Conservation areas forcing the Flood Control people to flush unwanted fresh water through the canals and out into the bay via the salinity dams. Catch it just right and loads of Snook, small Tarpon, Ladyfish, Jack Crevalles, Barracudas and Sharks will be holding at the mouth of these canals waiting for Shad, Freshwater Shrimp & Threadfin Herring to come floating right into their waiting jaws. The ocean inlets and beaches will hold plenty of Spawning Snook reminding us that these feisty game fish must be released unharmed until Sept.1.
Fishing in Flamingo will be outstanding if you can handle the heat and Mosquitoes. Snook, Redfish, Tarpon, Sharks, Tripletail & Speckled Sea Trout will be easy targets in lots of places in Flamingo throughout the summer. Some insect repellent at the boat ramp may be all you need to keep the bugs at bay and plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated and your in for a rewarding day at Flamingo.
Recent catches:
In Flamingo on 6/01/04, Bill Covington and friend using only surface plugs and Hank Brown Bucktalis tipped with a strip of Fishbites caught Snook to 7 1/2lbs.
In Flamingo on 6/02/04, Jerry C. & Don Kaplan caught Sea Trout, Jack Crevalles, Ladyfish and Sharks to 50 lbs.
In Flamingo on 6/03/04, Nick Connors caught his first Snook on an artificial Bucktail Jig tipped with a strip of Fishbites then went on to catch 3 more to 9 1/2 lbs.
In Flamingo on 6/04/04, Myron Tombs and nephew Montel caught over 40 Speckled Sea Trout to 18”s, loads of Ladyfish, Jack Crevalles, Gag Grouper, Mangrove Snapper, Sharks to 100 lbs., Spanish Mackerel and 2 Snook 5 ½ lbs and 6 ½ lbs.
In North Biscayne Bay Joel Dokson caught & released dozens of Ladyfish to 2 ½ lbs & Jack Crevalles plus had shots at Snook to 10 + lbs.
Early mornings, late afternoons and into the evening is the time to fish during the summer. Bring some sunscreen, wear a hat and a light long sleeved shirt and take a shot at some great inshore light tackle summer fishing.
