Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

FISHING NORTH BISCAYNE BAY
with Capt. Alan Sherman
It's time for another fishing report and I'm glad to say that the fishing has been about as hot as the weather. Resident south Florida fish like Snook, Trout, Tarpon, Redfish, Snapper, Tripletail, Bonefish, Permit, Barracuda, Sharks, Black Drum, Ladyfish, Jack Crevalles, and Dolphin & Bonita (that’s right ocean fish on an inshore boat, calm summer breezes lets me get my boat offshore when the conditions are right) are all warm weather fish, that's why they live here, so hot weather doesn't really bother them. It just takes a little understanding of the fish to know just when & where to target them. Summer fishing brings so many choices that it becomes hard to decide just what you want to fish for or where you want to fish.
This time of the year you may find me fishing in my back yard of North Biscayne Bay for Speckled Sea Trout, resident Tarpon, Jack Crevalles, Ladyfish, Snook, Barracuda, Shark, Snapper & Black Drum. All of
These fish are available throughout the summer months.
Or you might see me fishing outside the beaches on the Oceanside for Bonita’s from 5 to 15lbs. or 10 miles offshore looking for Dolphin.
Or I might be sight fishing for Bonefish, Permit, Barracudas & Sharks off of Elliot Key in just inches of water.
Or you might find me fishing the waters of Flamingo looking for Snook, Redfish, Sharks, Tripletail, Speckled Sea Trout, Jack Crevalles and Ladyfish.
The key to summer fishing is to fish early or late. I fish a lot of half-day trips during the summer. 7 AM to 11 AM or 4 PM to 8PM avoiding the times that may be too hot for angler or fish. Don't get me wrong though plenty of fish will be caught during the hottest part of the day and I will be doing full day trips for those that can handle it.
Recent Catches:
Olga Mellon on an early morning 1/2-day trip went 1 for 2 on Tarpon. Olga also caught and released a 10 lb. Barracuda on 6 lb. spin and had at least 6 casts at a Snook of 15 lbs. that absolutely refused her well placed fly. She also made many casts at Black Drum to 15 lbs & many Sheepshead.
George Marikos & son Alexander Marikos on a night trip caught as many as 15 Mangrove, Mutton & Lane Snapper plus Bluerunners and grunts. They released most of the catch. On another trip the guys caught over 60 Dolphin to 12 lbs. plus a 15 lb. Sharks and a Tripletail. These catches were made offshore of Miami.
Jerry Chaves and party caught 1 Snook on a Hank Brown Bucktail Jig, Ladyfish, Gag Grouper, Goliath Grouper, Spanish Mackerel on Fly and Speckled Sea Trout. They had shots at many Snook including a school of 6 to 10 fish that averages 10 lbs. plus shots at Redfish & Black Drum. They also had at least 6 Groupers & Goliath Groupers break their light tackle lines.
Well that's it for now so,
"Tight Lines & Good Fishing"
Capt. Alan Sherman
