North Biscayne Bay Fishing Report

Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

FISHING NORTH BISCAYNE BAY

with Capt. Alan Sherman

July 2, 2004

With the summer temperatures getting up into the 90’s the water temperature at high noon has been about as hot. You’ve heard the word “summer doldrums” well that’s what we are all experiencing right now. Since we have had very little rain recently there has been no cloud cover or cool raindrops mixing in with the bay water and the end result has been hot water & slow fishing. Don’t get too disappointed though, I didn’t say that there wasn’t anything out there to fish for I just said that it has been hot and the fishing slow. On recent trips this past week I fished North Biscayne Bay early in the morning and found Jack Crevalles and Mangrove Snappers biting. We also ran across a Snook close to 20 lbs. that we spooked before we could get a cast to it. We made many cast at small Tarpon that rolled around us and refused our offerings but appeared to be feeding on small glass minnows. We did manage to catch quite a few Speckled Sea Trout o just over 21”s but many of them were under 12”s. There have been lots of schools of bait in the bay but most of the schools have bait that are smaller then Glass Minnows. We watched Spanish Mackerel slash through the schools but did not manage to land any.

Fishing at night in North Biscayne Bay produced a few nice hits but no hook ups on Snook around dock lights. Fishing in South Biscayne Bay we were targeting Bonefish & Permit but only had 1 good shot at a group of 3 fish that we spooked on the cast. We did manage a few nice Barracudas and Mangrove Snappers not to mention a few shots at some large spooky Sharks.

Even though the water is hot and the air temperature too that doesn’t mean that you can’t find something to fish for this time of the year.

Dress for the weather, bring lots of fluids to drink, apply plenty of sunscreen and try to avoid the middle of the day when the air & water temperatures are at it’s highest levels.
