Fishing North Biscayne Bay
with Capt. Alan Sherman
I just returned from my families annual summer vacation. We spent 2 weeks exploring Alaska. Just an unbelievable place. Caught some real nice Salmon on light tackle and saw some incredible wildlife.
North Biscayne Bay fishing has finally turned on like it did last year. Small to medium sized Tarpon have move into the area and are feeding on the schools of small baits that are scattered in the bay. Snook are cruising the beach shorelines and around the mouth of the canals that lead into a salinity dam. Grass flats throughout the bay are holding, Speckled Sea Trout of many different sizes, Jack Crevalles as big as 12 lbs., Barracuda to 20 lbs., lots of small to medium sized Mangrove Snappers, Ladyfish and Bull Sharks to 40 lbs. Yes it is hot in the afternoons but thats the beauty of the fishing this time of the year, fish early like from 7 to 11 AM or late like from 4 to 8PM.
Fishing in Flamingo has been red hot with lots of Snook for catch and release, big Tarpon around the beaches and the grass flats near the marina, Redfish up on the flats, big Sharks, TripleTail on the markers. Jack Crevalles, Ladyfish and nice sized Mangrove Snapper. Don't let the Mosquitos scare you away from some of the best Flamingo fishing of the year.
Marty Engels & nephew Sam went 1 for 3 on Tarpon in North Biscayne Bay. Sam released a Tarpon around 70 lbs. which he caught on 6 lb. Ande Back Country monofilament line, a Daiwa 2500 Capricorn Spinning Reel and a 7' Key Largo Graphite Spinning rod. The Tarpon ate a 1/4 oz. chartreus Hook Up Lure tipped with a small pilchard. He fought the Tarpon for 2 1/2 hours. They also caught Ladyfish and small Speckled Sea Trout.
Ben Bishop and his 6 year old son Cord visiting from Jacksonville fished North Biscayne Bay in the morning and had numerous shots at Tarpon between 15 & 40 lbs.. They also chased a school of 8 to 12 lb. Jack Crevalles for close to an hour with no success. Cord caught a 10 lb. Bull Shark, Mangrove Snappers and lost a 15 lb. Barracuda that ate a 1/4 oz. Hook Up Lure tipped with a dead Threadfin Herring.
