Fishing North Biscayne Bay
with Capt. Alan Sherman
8/11/04
Finally that crazy weather pattern we had been experiencing for the last two weeks has moved on and left us with a more normal weather pattern. The heavy rains from last week have made much of North Biscayne Bay very brown and almost brackish but good fishing can still be had. We have had to move further into the bay and away from the salinity dams to find water that was more on the salty side for good Speckled Sea Trout action. The oval Cajun Thunder with a Hook Up Lure and a plastic tail tipped with a Fishbite strip has produced some real nice Trout. Mangrove Snapper are on the grass flats plus around many of the docks scattered throughout the bay. Blacktip & Bull Sharks to 70 lbs. have been chasing schools of bait closer to the salinity dams and have shown some interest in surface plugs. On trips that we have been on the water at first light we have had good action on small Tarpon, Sharks, large Jack Crevalles & Barracudas. Throwing a 10’ ¼” mesh West Coast Cast Net has yielded plenty of live Pilchards for bait. Snook action has been somewhat predictable on live Pilchards but must be released until September 1st. Late afternoon action has seen some fast action on Ladyfish, Tarpon and Snook. On calm days we have been able to sneak out into the ocean and have found some real good King & Cero Mackerel action plus lots of Bonita’s and Mutton & Yellowtail Snappers. My son Zack will be going away to college in a few weeks and I have had a chance to fish with him a few times recently. On Monday the two of us headed down to Flamingo and had one of those days you just dream of. After weeks of rain and west winds the weather finally turned for the better and we headed out into the gulf to see what we could muster up. The water was slick with a bit of a swell left over by the bad weather. On our way out we ran into a school of large feeding Tarpon but had no luck so continued to our destination. Once at out spot we immediately spotted some schools of Permit and had a double header on live crabs. Our fish were determined to stay with the 50 or more fish in the school and their strategy worked because they were able to free themselves by rubbing our 8 & 10lb. lines against other fish and breaking us off. We had 2 more crabs left, one small and a large Tarpon crab. The small crab got eaten right away but the Permit refused the larger crab. We turned our attention to Zack’s fish and thought we had the upper hand when out of nowhere a pair of large Sharks came up and ate our Permit. Off to the North of us we could hear some commotion and saw a large school of fish feeding on a baitfish school. We headed over to them and enjoyed nonstop action on Jacks, Bluerunners and Spanish Mackerel. We tired of the smaller fish and headed back to our spot and anchored up. Soon Zack had released a small Cobia that ate a Hook Up Lure Buctail Jig tipped with a Fishbite strip. The Cobia narrowly missed being eaten by a Shark. We dropped whole dead Mullet down to the bottom and quickly hooked up with a large fish on a 40 lb. outfit. 20 minutes later a 50 lb. Goliath Grouper surfaced. After hooking many more large fish and loosing them we managed to land a 21 lber and a 100 lber. The whole time we were on the spot large schools of Permit & Jack Crevalles cruised around us and Giant Sea Turtles surfaced. I thought we where at the Seaquarium. The 6 to 8 lb. Jacks cooperated but the Permit refused everything we threw their way. We caught a 30 lb. Dusky Shark but lost 2 large Spinner Sharks that wrapped our line around their body’s when they jumped and spun breaking us off. What a day!
