North Biscayne Bay Fishing Report

Capt. Alan Sherman
August 28, 2004
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing North Biscayne Bay

with Capt. Alan Sherman

Aug. 28th.

If you haven’t been out of bed before 7 AM in the last two weeks then you have missed some of the best inshore light tackle fishing that North Biscayne Bay has had to offer this summer. Calm flat tranquil waters have produced some incredible light tackle surface action over the grass flats and shorelines. Snook, Tarpon, Jack Crevalles, Barracudas, Speckled Sea Trout, Mangrove Snappers, Black Tip & Bull Sharks have been very active right up till about noon. The reason for this is the early morning cooler water. Once the evening sun sets in the west the water temperature starts dropping and continues to drop getting very close to the outside early morning temperature which can be as low as the high 70’s or low 80’s. As soon as the morning sun rises the water temperature starts rising slowly reaching its max by about 3 in the afternoon. Those high temperatures may get into the upper 90’s if the water is shallow which it is in most of Biscayne Bay. Even our resident fish can’t handle that so they slow down and look for deeper cooler water. The way around that is to fish early mornings then get off the water by 11 AM and start fishing again around 3 or 4 in the afternoon. Late afternoons have produced well but the water will still be at least 5 degree’s warmer by sunset compared to first light in the mornings. My game plan recently has been to fish ½ day charters, 7 to 11AM and 4 to 8PM. and avoiding the hottest and slowest part of the day.

Recent Catches:

Jamie Snapp and his sons Bently & Robert caught and released 1 Snook, 6 Mangrove Snappers, Jack Crevalles, Barracudas and 6 Speckled Sea Trout in a 4 hour ½ day trip in North Biscayne Bay.

Norman Dietchek and son Jordan & grandson Eric caught and released 2 Snook, a dozen Barracudas, Mangrove Snappers, Jacks and Speckled Sea Trout. In a 4 hr. morning trip in North Biscayne Bay.

Mark Piper and daughters Helen & Maggie caught 1 Snook, 6 Jack Crevalles & Bluerunners, Barracudas , Speckled Sea Trout to 2 ½ lbs. and lost a 20 lb. Bull Shark on a 4 hr. morning trip in North Biscayne Bay.
