FISHING NORTH BISCAYNE BAY
With Capt. Alan Sherman
It’s hard to believe that so much time has past by since my last fishing report but that just goes to show you how busy I have been and how great the fishing has been. The International Miami Beach Boat Show ended last Monday and what a show it was. Hope you got a chance to check out the Yamaha line of outboard engines or the seminars that were given by some of the best Capt’s. up and down the coast. The Pathfinder 22’ Tournament caught my eye and has so for sometime with it’s 3 live wells, 11’’s of draft, lockable rod lockers, leaning post and 1350 lbs. Looks to me like it would make a nice replacement boat for my 21’ Hewes Redfisher.
Fishing in North Biscayne Bay has picked up as water temperatures rise. Pilchards are schooling around many of the grass flats in North Bay and large Sea Trout have been feeding on them plus the Shrimp that are hiding in the grasses. A few Pompano, Snook, Ladyfish, Barracudas, Sharks, lots of Jack Crevalles and lots Trout from ½ lbers to over 4 lbers. have been eating live Pilchards & Shrimp on a Cajun Thunder or Hook Up Lures with Shrimp or baitfish plastic tails on almost any grass flat that you find that has had a few birds working on or near it. Schools of Bluefish have been roaming the bay and if your lucky enough to find the gulls diving to the surface of the water there is a good chance Bluefish are feeding under them. A long cast with a Crocodile Spoon has gotten their attention in a flash. Snook have been active at night around the shadow lines of bridges and under dock lights however the one draw back is that law enforcement has made it difficult and frustrating to fish some of the Northern parts of the bay by chasing us away from some of the better docks and bridges. Good idea is to make sure you safety equipment is in order. The Snook have been feeding on live Pilchards & live Shrimp free lined or on a ¼ oz to 3/8 oz. Hook Lure. Tarpon have been feeding well on live Shrimp slow trolled behind the boat anywhere from just North of Bakers Haulover to Gov. Cut just outside the swim boundary’s.
Fishing in Everglades National Park has been great as long as you can avoid the days when the wind is blowing from the west. Trout, Jacks, Ladyfish, Bluefish, Mackerel, Cobia and Tripletail have been active around the Gulf side flats and in the open water. On the flats or finger channels Reds and Snook have been biting as long as the water temperatures are up. In the rivers and river mouths Reds, Snook, Sheepshead and Black Drum have been active.
The weather patterns should stay about the same with cold fronts moving through a little slower now but still about once a week. Water temperatures should stay a little higher from now on and we can expect to see the beginning of the Spring Migration to take place at anytime.
So get out there and take advantage of the milder temperatures and the great variety of fish and fishing that South Florida has to offer.
