North Biscayne Bay Fishing Report

Capt. Alan Sherman
March 15, 2005
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

FISHING NORTH BISCAYNE BAY

with CAPT. ALAN SHERMAN

What a difference a year cam make! Last March the wind blew like a hurricane for the whole month and if that wasn’t enough it continued right into May. This March we had some really great weather with light winds and mild temperatures and great fishing.

North Biscayne Bay for much of the winter has been void of baitfish. Water temperatures were in the 60’s and that kept most of the schools of pilchards, threadfin herring and Spanish sardines in Government Cut and along the outside beaches. The only baitfish in the bay was glass minnows and shrimp. Most of our migratory fish stayed along the beaches or further offshore but on occasion schools of baitfish moved in to the bay attracting some large schools of bluefish, ladyfish and large jack crevalles. Speckled sea trout were in good numbers and size with a lot of them full of roe. Snook were available in the day time but only when the water had warmed up for a few days otherwise you had to fish at night and that had been difficult mostly because the dock lights and bridges that hold most of the fish were being patrolled by police boats that would quickly usher you away from the spots. Tarpon fishing along the beaches were extremely good during the day and at night. From Bakers Haulover all the way down to Government Cut almost everyday or night you had a good chance at a tarpon.

Fishing in Flamingo was great to say the least and should only get better as the water continues to warm and the west winds subside. March provided lots of mackerel, bluefish, ladyfish, pompano, jacks, tripletail, cobia and sharks out in the gulf. All you had to do was find a depth of 6 to 9 feet with greenish water and drop a chum bag over the side and in no time every bait would get hit. We had great success with Cajun Thunders and 30”s of thirty lb. mono for a leader with a small split shot and a 1/0 Mustad long shank hook baited with a live shrimp. Hook Up lures with a live shrimp also produced plenty of action. In side along the rivers on the last of the falling tide snook, reds and tarpon were very active on hook up lures and large live shrimp cast along the shorelines. Goliath groupers on the lowest stages of the tide could be seen tailing along the inside shorelines. Getting one to see your bait was the problem.

Now that April is here you can almost expect the same fishing as we had in March except better because of warmer temperatures. The only downside to April fishing is the wind and that’s were inshore fishing in North Biscayne Bay excels. That’s because there is almost always a protected shoreline to fish in North Biscayne Bay. Expect the spring migration of baitfish to kick into high gear in April and hopefully this year it will be as good as the fall migration. Remember the spring migration is the reverse of the fall migration where the baitfish and migratory fish are heading north for the summer. Expect the predators to be a few pounds bigger then they were in the fall after feeding on baitfish all winter long.

So no matter where you choose to fish you can expect April fishing to full of variety and action.

So get out there and give it a try.

Give me a call and check my availability of April or May and let’s go get some fish on the “Get Em”!
