Before going on vacation the fishing couldn’t have been better. Mild temperatures and calm weather had us catching large Jack Crevalles, Ladyfish and large Speckled Sea Trout in North Biscayne Bay. Tarpon were schooled up along the beaches from Bakers Haulover to Gov. Cut. In the bay all you had to do was concentrate on the Sea Trout with live Shrimp under a Cajun Thunder or a Hook Up Lure tipped with a Shrimp tail and a piece of Fishbites while you scanned the area for birds diving. Once we spotted the birds we would race over to them and throw natural baits and surface plugs in the area and those big hungry Jack Crevalles would just go nuts. These fish were averaging 8 to 16 lbs. and on 6 & lb. spin we would fight them for up to 30 minutes.
For the Tarpon we were drifting large live Shrimp behind the boat as we made slow drifts along the beach.
My last trip before going on vacation we found a large group of Tarpon in the 50 to 150 lb. class laid up on one of the shallow grass flats. They ignored everything we threw at them. They were daisy chaining and had we had a fly rod on board I’m sure we could have gotten one interested in a fly. I expect these fish to move up into Dumfoundling Bay anytime now.
Since returning the Tarpon have moved further south and are concentrated around Gov. Cut. Live Shrimp are still the number one bait.
Trout are spawning now and there are plenty of big fish to be had. It might not be a bad idea to release these spawning fish for the next few months so that they have the opportunity to spawn and replenish the bay with a new generation of Trout. There are plenty of finger Mullet moving into the bay and as of yesterday the Big Jack Crevalles were going nuts on them. I expect to see a return of Spanish Mackerel in the bay any day now and am looking forward to Pompano to be around the flats also. Jim Taubenfeld and his 12 yr. Old daughter Deanna and his 7 yr. Old son Bennie fishing a morning trip in North Biscayne Bay teamed up to catch 3 Jack Crevalles of 9 lbs., 9 ¼ lbs. and 11 ½ lbs. plus a dozen Speckled Sea Trout to 3 ¼ lbs.
Fishing in Flamingo was as good as it gets before I left with the mild weather that we had and the warmer temperatures we were getting lots of Mackerel to 6 lbs., Pomapano, Bluefish, Jacks, Ladyfish, Sharks, Sea Trout, Tripletail and Cobia.
So take advantage of the spring migration and the warmer temperatures and give me a call and lets set up a fishing trip or 2.
Catch me live on Saturday mornings at 6 to 7 AM for The Florida Sportsman Magazines Live Radio Show on WAXY 790 AM The Ticket for the latest fishing reports in South Florida.
