North Biscayne Bay Fishing Report

Capt. Alan Sherman
May 4, 2005
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

FISHING IN NORTH BISCAYNE BAY

with Capt. Alan Sherman

Been very busy for the last couple of weeks but with the unsettled weather of this week it gives me an opportunity to catch up on my fishing reports and updates.

The spring migration has been under way for quite sometime and will continue right into early June. Fishing in North Biscayne Bay has been very good but a bit challenging with the strong winds that have plagued us this April and early May. Lots of silver mullet are moving through the bay and along with them are schools of glass minnows, Spanish sardines and pilchards. Most days with the strong winds it has been difficult to find the smaller baits but when you can get them it has made a big difference in the daily catch. With a 10’ 3/8 inch mesh West Coast Cast Net I have been able to fill at least one of my live wells in my 21’ Hewes Redfisher with enough bait to chum and fish. Feeding on the schools of baitfish have been jack crevalles to 12 lbs., snook, tarpon, speckled sea trout, small barracudas, ladyfish, snapper, grouper and Spanish mackerel. Anchoring in North Biscayne Bay and live chumming and casting free lined pilchards or Spanish sardines on a Mustad 1/0 long shank hook has rewarded us with good catches of mackerel, jacks and ladyfish. Drifting or anchoring on the grass flats in North Biscayne Bay and casting ¼ oz. Hook Up Lures tipped with a plastic shrimp or fish tail and a piece of Fishbites or a live shrimp or pilchard under a Cajun Thunder has produced a lot speckled sea trout. Almost all of these sea trout are full of roe right now so keep that in mind when you bring that fish to boatside. Keep a few for a fresh dinner but release the rest carefully for the future. Snook fishing has been steady in the bay with a lot of small fish in the daytime and bigger fish in the evenings. Snook are moving into their spawning areas and we have just under a month left to take advantage of the open season before it closes. Make sure your boat’s safety equipment is up to date and that you obey the idle zones and slow speeds plus the fishing regulations. There has been a lot of law enforcement on the water in and around North Biscayne Bay and they have been checking a lot of boats. Tarpon are still pretty thick at Gov. Cut and feeding periodically on live shrimp and crabs. At night when the mullet are moving through the inlets tarpon and snook have been blowing the mullet out of the water.

Fishing in Flamingo remain very good when the water has had a chance to calm down and clear up. On the Gulfside Spanish mackerel, jack crevalles, bluefish, bluerunners and lots of small sharks are responding well to a good chum line. I have been using Mark’s Chum with great success. Grass flats in Flamingo on the higher stages are producing great catches of speckled sea trout, jacks and ladyfish. Snook although out of season now on the Gulfside have been biting well in East Cape Canal and are moving out into the Gulfside shorelines where they will set up their spawning areas. Snook have also been quite active on the shallow flats feeding on schools of finger mullet. Redfish have been in good supply on the shallow flats and along many of the shorelines around Cape Sable.
