FISHING NORTH BISCAYNE BAY
with Capt. Alan Sherman
Wow it’s been awhile since my last fishing update so lets see what’s been going on for the last few weeks. Summer time conditions are in full force and water temperatures have reflected just that with very warm water in the afternoons. Lots of rain has meant that the water management people needed to unload water from drainage canals and from Lake Okeechobee. So where does all of that water go? Well the answer is eventually to the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. To get to the Atlantic that water had to go through the bays and for us in the North Biscayne Bay area that meant it had to go through North Biscayne Bay to get to the Atlantic and that really messed up our area for a few weeks. Finally we have seen an improvement in our water quality and the residential fish and baitfish have responded well. Small summer and fall tarpon have shown up in their normal haunts and have been feeding well on small live baits. Snook are in the inlets and areas near by as they continue to spawn. Medium to large jack crevalles continue to roam the bay. Mangrove snappers are on the grass flats with plenty of small to mid sized barracudas. Speckled sea trout are scattered over all of the grass flats but mostly on the flats that birds are working baitfish schools. Ladyfish, snook, tarpon and mangrove snappers are feeding well around dock lights and bridges at night. Key to fishing North Biscayne Bay this time of the year is to fish early from 7 to 11 AM or late from 6 to 10 PM avoiding the hottest part of the day.
Flamingo in Everglades National Park is the hot spot this time of year and an 8 hr. trip is the way to go. Anglers must wear light long sleeved shirts and light long pants plus have a good supply of Smart Shield Sunscreen (www.smartshield.com) and a good insect repellent to repel the bugs and sun. Anglers must also have plenty of fluids so not to get dehydrated. For those who are up to the challenge they will find light fishing pressure and plenty of snook, tarpon, redfish, jack crevalles, ladyfish, permit, sharks, goliath groupers, snapper and a few tripletail and cobia available.
Some new and exciting things will be happening for myself and my clients in the next week or so. First The Florida Sportsman Magazines Live Radio Show which has aired on WAXY 790 AM for the last 9 years will move to WKAT 1360 AM from 7 to 8 AM starting Saturday August 6th, 2005. Listeners will continue to get up to the minute fishing reports from local Captains like Jimbo Thomas of the Thomas Flyer(Miami Offshore), Bouncer Smith of Bouncers Dusky(Miami Offshore), Skip Bradeen of Blue Chips Two(Islamorada Offshore), Dennis Forgione of Freespool(Miami Offshore), Wayne Conn of The Reward Fleet(Miami Offshore), Jay Cohen of The Spellbound(Miami Offshore), Chris Hunter(Miami Freshwater), The Newport Fishing Pier(Miami), The Delphs out of Key West(Offshore), Rick Brady & Tom Zack of Happy Day Today(Ft. Lauderdale Offshore), Frank Carbone(Ft. Lauderdale Freshwater) and of course Host Capt. Alan Sherman(Miami & Flamingo Inshore & Offshore), Capt Jim Anson(Miami & Flamingo Freshwater & Inshore), Capt Pete Silot(Miami & Flamingo Inshore) and Rick Barry of Key Largo Rods(Islamorada Inshore and Offshore).
Next I will be replacing my 2003 Hewes Redfisher powered by a Yamaha 200 hp. V Max HPDI outboard engine that has served my clients flawlessly for the past 3 years with a brand new 2005 22’ V Tournament edition Pathfinder powered by a 2005 Yamaha 200 hp. V Max HPDI outboard engine. This boat will be complimented with a Minn Kota 24 volt trolling motor, Lowrance GPS depth recorder, Ship to Shore marine radio and more. It will be called “Get Em 2”. This boat floats in 11 inches of water but will cruise in just inches and because it is a bay boat this boat will allow me more days in the ocean on a marginal day.
So what are you waiting for? Call me or send me an E-Mail and lets set up a special day of fishing in North Biscayne bay or Flamingo in Evergaldes National Park.
