North Biscayne Bay Fishing Report

Capt. Alan Sherman
August 20, 2005
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

FISHING NORTH BISCAYNE BAY

with Capt. Alan Sherman

Here we are in August and water temperatures in the bay are averaging around 88 to 92 degrees depending on what time of the day you were on the water. For a lot of us who pay attention to the tropical outlook each summer the high water temperatures may cause some concern. It has been a long time since we have seen water temperatures as high as they are right now and that is probably why we have had so many tropical systems this early in the hurricane season. I fear that a big hurricane is in our future and it might be a good idea to plan ahead.

Now to the fishing! I am now guiding out of a brand new 22’ Pathfinder Tournament Bay Boat and am already realizing how great this new boat with it’s 2006 Yamaha V Max 200 HPDI is going to be for my business. Yesterday with 2 adults and 2 children ages 8 & 10 in a short 4-hour trip the kids logged catches of jack crevalles to 5 lbs., hooked and lost large ladyfish, countless mangrove snappers, barracudas and keeper size speckled sea trout. All in North Biscayne Bay before 11:30 AM., then in the afternoon we were out in the ocean off Bakers Haulover in a 3 to 4 foot chop. The boat handled the conditions better then expected. Although we only had a few hits in the ocean back in the bay we had non-stop action on bluerunners, ladyfish and jack crevalles before a 100-pound bull shark devoured a 6 lb jack and killed the action. That was August 19th with ocean temperatures in the upper 80’s and bay temperatures right around 92 degrees. Key to fishing right now is to be on the water by 7 AM and off by 11 AM then back on the water at 5 PM and back by 9 PM avoiding the hottest part of the day.

Fishing in Flamingo in Everglades National Park has bee very good despite the hot weather conditions. Out in the open gulf permit, cobia, large jack crevalles, Spanish mackerel and a few tripletails have been active. In closer to the shorelines snook, tarpon, ladyfish, jack crevalles, redfish and sharks have been biting very good. On the grass flats and finger channels, mangrove snappers, sea trout, jacks, ladyfish, redfish, tarpon and snook have been biting real well. If you’re into shark fishing then now is the time to be in Flamingo. Countless numbers of bull, black tip, and lemon sharks have been biting on anything thrown their way.

In North Biscayne Bay I will continue to run half day trips until the water cools down a bit avoiding the hottest parts of the day but in Flamingo where there is deeper cooler water I will be running full 8 our trips. I am booked solid through the end of August but have openings scattered in Oct. and November.

Don’t let the heat keep you from fulfilling your fishing needs just remember to plan your trips around the cooler parts of the day. Don’t miss this years Florida Sportsman Fishing Show September 24th and 25th. I will be doing a presentation on fishing in North Biscayne Bay. Go to www.floridasportsman.com for more information. Listen to The Florida Sportsman Magazines Live Radio Show every Saturday morning from 7 to 8 AM on 1360 WKAT AM.
