North Biscayne Bay Fishing Report

Capt. Alan Sherman
September 13, 2005
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing North Biscayne Bay, Flamingo and Offshore

with Capt. Alan Sherman

If you haven’t been on the water recently then you are missing out on some of the best fishing of the year! The fall migration is under way and schools of baitfish like finger mullet, pilchards, threadfin herring and Spanish sardines have moved into the bay only to be reinforced by more baitfish schools for the next couple of months. In North Biscayne Bay, jack crevalles, ladyfish, snapper, sea trout, barracuda, snook and tarpon have been working the baitfish schools on a daily basis. Soon Spanish mackerel, bluefish and pompano will join into the mix. Off shore from the inlets to the beaches and then further offshore schools of ballyhoo and flying fish have been terrorized by bonitas, king mackerel, jacks, bluerunners, snappers and dolphin. Just today fishing from Bakers Haulover we caught our bait in North Biscayne bay then moved to the inlets and caught jack crevalles and bluerunners. Moving a little further offshore we caught cero mackerel on every cast then tried some bottom fishing and landed some fat yellowtail snappers plus bonitas that ate our baits on the way to the bottom. After the bottom fishing we moved just a little further offshore to the Gulf Stream edge where we were greeted by a nice group of 10 to 15 lb. dolphin. A little later another group of dolphin ate our slow trolled finger mullet. These fish were bookends of the earlier fish. The whole time that we were in the ocean we watched schools and schools of flying fish and ballyhoo showering the surface all around us. Jacks, bonitas, mackerel, dolphin and small tunas were having a ball on the baits. By days end we had plenty of fish for the table and sore arms. With the light west winds that we have been having you couldn’t ask for better fishing conditions. These fishing conditions and the great fishing should continue right into November when the strong cold fronts will disrupt everything.

So what are you waiting for? Get off the couch and pick up the phone and give me a call and let’s book a trip before the fish get full!

I am now guiding out of a brand new 22’ Pathfinder Tournament Bay Boat and am already realizing how great this new boat with it’s 2006 Yamaha V Max 200 HPDI is going to be for my business.
