North Biscayne Bay Fishing Report

Capt. Alan Sherman
January 23, 2006
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing North Biscayne Bay, Offshore and Flamingo

With Capt. Alan Sherman

Fishing the past few weeks has been everywhere on the scale from1 to 10 depending on where you fished and what day you were fishing. This pattern will continue for the next few months due to the unpredictable weather patterns January, Feb. and March provide.

Fishing in North Biscayne Bay has been fair with plenty of speckled sea trout available although most are undersized some have been as big as 4 lbs. Small to medium sized jack crevalles have been working the remaining schools of baitfish in the bay. Scattered Spanish mackerel, ladyfish and a few pompano have been mixed in with the baitfish schools. We have been catching small mangrove snapper in the deeper rockier channels. Small to medium sized tarpon and a few snook have been available at night around the few remaining dock lights and bridge shadow lines. Best action has been associated with calmer weather and shrimp runs.

Fishing offshore has been one of the most exciting trips we have had recently with plenty of action on king mackerel, Spanish mackerel, dolphin and bonitas. There has been an incredible run of sailfish in the last few weeks but for me the weather has not allowed me to take advantage of them.

Fishing out of Crandon Park Marina and running to the finger channels has produced as many as 13 different species in a day. Most of the fish in the channels have been mutton, mangrove, and yellowtail snapper plus red and black grouper, Spanish mackerel, grunts, bluefish, small sharks, bluerunners and jack crevalles.

The key to the best fishing has been the weather. On calm days fishing offshore in my Pathfinder Bay boat has been exciting. On the windier days fishing the finger channels has produced plenty of action and for those who like it calm North Biscayne Bay has produced plenty of sea trout action.
