North Biscayne Bay Fishing Report

Capt. Alan Sherman
February 20, 2006
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing North Biscayne Bay, South Biscayne Bay, Flamingo and Offshore

with Capt. Alan Sherman

Time for a fishing update. Hope everybody had a great time at the Miami Boat Show. So much to see and so many new products to think about buying. One that caught my eye right away was the StowMaster Saltwater Series Precision landing Net. If you’re like me you can never find a good place on your boat to stow your landing net. All of the good ones are so big and always in the way. After looking at the StowMaster net it was love at first sight. When folded it will easily stow away in any ones rod locker. www.stowmaster.net

Anyway I have fished a lot of clients recently and the fishing has been quite good. North Biscayne Bay has had a lot of sea trout with some really nice fish mixed in with the small ones. Shrimp under a Cajun Thunder has been almost as effective as a ¼ oz red or chartreuse Hook Up Lure and a plastic shrimp tail with a piece of Fishbites added for scent. Along with the trout a few jack crevalles, ladyfish and pompano have been mixed in. Something that has troubled me lately in North Biscayne Bay is the vanishing grass flats. I’m not sure why they are disappearing but I am seeing a lot of bare spots on many of the grass flats. Could be from Hurricane Wilma or manatees but I think it probably is from boat props and large cast nets. Further south in the finger channels south of Key Biscayne we have been doing very well on an assortment of fish like pompano, bonefish, mutton snapper, black and gag grouper, Spanish mackerel, bluefish, bluerunners and small sharks. On the ocean side of Miami we had lots of King mackerel and dolphin action. Tarpon have been hitting real good off of the beaches during the late afternoons.

The Florida Bay boat ramp in Flamingo is open on one side finally and fishing there has been very good. On Saturday this past week we fished off of Sandy Key and caught small sharks and bluefish then moved into one of the creeks along the Gulf side creeks and had a few bites but no takers then ended up around Conchie Channel where small trout, ladyfish and jack crevalles ate every bait that hit the water. On Sunday we fished a few miles further southwest of Sandy Key and the Spanish mackerel were thick. The mackerel ate every shrimp that hit the water until my guys begged me to give their arms a break and fish for something else. We then fished close to Sandy Key and caught ladyfish, jack crevalles and nice sized sea trout until it was time to come in.

Looking for something to do on Saturday March 11th then sign up for The Mast Academy High Schools 3rd Annual PTSA Fishing Tournament. Captain’s Meeting on Friday March 10th. Fun fishing, great prizes, great barbecue and all for the kids. For more information call Suzanne Levinson at 305-376-4676 or go to http://mast.dade.k12.fl.us
