North Biscayne Bay Fishing Report

Capt. Alan Sherman
March 22, 2006
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing North Biscayne Bay, South Biscayne Bay, Flamingo and Offshore with Capt. Alan Sherman

Wow! Where do I start? Have had a very busy schedule for the past month or so with Boat Shows, Yamaha photo shoots, Mast Academy’s Annual Fishing Tournament, writing fishing reports, Florida Sportsman Magazine’s Live Radio Show and of course fishing and you probably thought the life of a fishing guide was easy!

Fishing in South Florida has been about as good as it gets and with my new 22’ Pathfinder I have been able to fish so many different South Florida fisheries that even on a bad weather day I have been able to put my clients in an area that has hungry fish and somewhat sheltered waters. On calm days we have fished offshore of Miami and Key Biscayne targeting the plentiful schools of king mackerel and dolphin that have been and will continue to migrate along our South Florida coast. While offshore we have had shots at sailfish, amberjacks, bonita, snapper and grouper. On the days that the winds have come up we have fished off of Key Biscayne in the finger channels and have had steady action on Spanish mackerel, bluefish, pompano, jack crevalles, bluerunners, snapper and grouper and then in North Biscayne Bay speckled sea trout have been consistent and just recently sea trout have started spawning and are traveling in schools with many of the fish over 20 inches. Large jack crevalles with some as big as 18 pounds are roaming North Biscayne Bay and an occasional big tarpon have eaten our rigs that were intended for sea trout. Now that the Florida Bay boat ramps are open at Flamingo we have been fishing the outside of Florida Bay with great success on snook, redfish, sea trout, jack crevalles and ladyfish. The week of March 27th will allow great snook fishing in Flamingo.

For the next 3 months the Spring Migration will be taking place and all of the migratory fish that moved south during the fall to flee the colder water temperatures are now heading north so expect lots of king mackerel some as big as 50 pounds, Spanish mackerel, bluefish, pompano, sailfish, dolphin, blackfin tuna and bonita to be feeding on the migrating baitfish schools from the beaches on out to the Gulf Stream. Inshore in North Biscayne Bay large spawning sea trout will be hungry and aggressive with big Spanish mackerel, king mackerel, bluefish, pompano, large jack crevalles, ladyfish, tarpon and a return of the daytime snook fishing with the warmer water temperatures. In Flamingo you have until the end of April to get a snook for the dinner table before the West coast snook season closes until September 1st. Some of the best snook fishing will take place from mid April through out the summer months in Flamingo. Sea trout will be big and spawning and redfish will be plentiful out of Flamingo.

Check out my weekly South Florida Fishing Report at www.florida sportsman.com and my monthly South Florida Fishing Report in The Florida Sportsman Magazine each month. We continue to broadcast the Florida Sportsman Magazine Live on WKAT 1360 AM every Sat. morning from 7 to 8 AM. where we get up to the minute fishing forecasts from some of the top Capt.’s in South Florida like Capt. Jimbo Thomas on the Thomas Flyer, Capt. Bouncer Smith on Bouncers Dusky, Capt Skip Bradeen on the Blue Chips Two out of Whale Harbor Marina, Capt. Wayne Conn on The Reward Fleet, the Newport Fishing Pier and more.

If you haven’t booked a trip with me already for the up coming Spring season then give me a call and lets get you out for a special fishing adventure on the “Get Em”.
