Fishing North Biscayne Bay, South Biscayne Bay, Flamingo and Offshore
With Capt. Alan Sherman
The spring migration is now in full swing with schools of baitfish like pilchards, glass minnows and silver mullet migrating north through the bay. This is one of the best times to target some of the biggest fish of the year. In North Biscayne Bay spawning speckled sea trout some as big as 6 lbs. have been blasting baitfish imitations like the Rapala X Rap in the green sided and green back styles. For surface fishermen the Rapala Skitter Walk has been getting some great surface strikes from the hungry spawning sea trout. While targeting trout large jack crevalles and big ladyfish have intercepted our artificial lures as well. The Capt. Hank Brown Hook Up Lures in a ¼ oz size with a soft plastic baitfish tail and apiece of Fishbites for added scent has worked as well. For baitfisher’s a live pilchard under a Cajun Thunder cork hooked to a 1/0 long shank Mustad hook has caught many of the trout plus Spanish mackerel, snook, ladyfish and large jack crevalles. The same rig with a live shrimp instead of the pilchard has been good for scattered pompano that have moving in and out of the bay.
In Gov. Cut during the first couple of morning hour’s tarpon have been active and will continue to feed in and around the inlet right into May. At that time we will start seeing tarpon move back into the North Biscayne Bay and Dumfounding Bay. While targeting the tarpon in the inlet Spanish mackerel, snapper and yellow jacks have kept us busy in between tarpon strikes.
The finger channels off of Key Biscayne have slowed now that the water temperatures are climbing but the action on blacktip, bulls and a few lemon sharks has been consistent.
Fishing in Everglades National Park will get better and better everyday as we get closer to the snook-spawning season. Snook, redfish and tarpon action has been steady in the river mouths and finger channels right outside of Flamingo.
Offshore fishing has been heating up with nice kingfish, some of the biggest dolphin of the year, sailfish, cobia, bonita and the beginning of the blackfin tuna season.
If you haven’t had a chance to fish recently then it’s time! So pick up the phone or drop me an E-Mail and lets get out on the water.
