Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

FISHING NORTH BISCAYNE BAY
with CAPT. ALAN SHERMAN
Time for a spring fishing update! Finally the rains have started falling and that is why I am writing this report and not fishing. The spring migration continues in South Florida and with the mild weather conditions we have been able to fish pretty much wherever we want. With my new twenty two foot Pathfinder we have fished offshore from the beach to one thousand feet of water, inside North Biscayne Bay and all over Flamingo with very good results.
Take advantage of the calm conditions and give me a call and let’s see what we can catch on your next fishing adventure.
North Biscayne Bay has had tons of silver mullet holding around the numerous grass flats in North Biscayne Bay. A few schools of quality sized pilchards, Spanish sardines and threadfin herring have been in the same areas as well. Large and small sea trout, snook, tarpon, jack crevalles, ladyfish, bull, lemon and bonnethead sharks and barracudas have been feeding on all of these baitfish when they have felt the urge. With all of the bait in the bay it sometimes requires being in the right place at the right time to get that special strike.
The Flamingo outside boat ramp has been closed now for a few weeks so almost all of the action has come from launching from the inside ramp and running out to Shark River where the action has been very good on large sea trout, ladyfish, jack crevalles, snapper, cobia, Spanish mackerel, permit, tripletail, Goliath grouper, bluefish, sharks and tarpon. Bugs have not been a problem but with the current rains you can expect them soon. A good bug repellent like the Avon Skin So Soft Bug Guard Plus or a mosquito net hat will keep the bugs away until you clear the mainland then you should be OK until you return to the boat ramp. As of this Saturday the twenty seventh the Florida Bay boat ramp will reopen till the fifth of June and the close again until further notice. My last trip on the Florida Bay side produced fourteen landed and released redfish to twenty-six inches plus a few that the numerous lemon sharks ate will being reeled in. Snook although out of season will be in good numbers on the Florida Bay side as well as in the Shark River area.
Offshore of Miami king mackerel continue to provide good action on live baits. Mixed in with the kings have been bonitos, blackfin tunas, sailfish, barracuda and quite a few dolphin.
