FISHING NORTH BISCAYNE BAY> FLAMINGO and OFFSHORE
with Capt. Alan Sherman
The summer is just getting underway and we already have a tropical depression bearing down on South Florida. We can only hope that the storms this year steer clear of areas hit last year to give them a chance to rebound. Every time I head out on the water in areas that have grass flats I am amazed at how much damage they sustained by Katrina and Wilma. In the big picture I have to believe that the storms created a cleaning process that flushed unwanted silt and debris off the flats and into deeper water or on shorelines where it once was.
Fishing in North Biscayne Bay has been somewhat disappointing recently with speckled sea trout being the most dependable fish in the bay. Schools of silver mullet continue to hold in much of the bay and the only predators that I see messing with the mullet are sea trout and barracudas. We have had only limited daytime snook action in the bay where the past few years we saw lots of daytime snook action. Tarpon action in the bay has been only at night and the fish have been small. Jack crevalles have been scattered and small, as have the ladyfish and snappers. I think the main reason for this is the lack of pilchards, Spanish sardines and threadfin herring in the bay.
Ocean fishing has been the most consistent fishing recently with early mornings and late afternoons being the times of the day with the most action. King mackerel, bonitos, dolphin, sailfish and blackfin tuna have been hitting live pilchards.
Flamingo fishing was great until the Florida Bay boat ramp closed last week. Snook, redfish, sharks, snapper, jack crevalles, ladyfish, cobia, tripletail and Goliath grouper have been hitting almost all day long on the Florida Bay side and in the Gulf of Mexico but with the Florida Bay boat closed fishermen are faced with the choice of either launching from the Florida Key and making the long run across or launching on the inside boat ramp and fishing your way to the Gulf of Mexico. The mosquitoes have not been a big problem as of yet but with the current rain that will change.
